The most influential dictionary in the history of the English language is written by Samuel Johnson. It was published on 15 April 1755 by the name of A Dictionary of the English Language, sometimes as Johnson's Dictionary.

It is believed that Johnson took nearly nine years to complete the work but he was expecting to complete this work in three years. He accomplished this difficult work single-handedly, with only clerical assistance to copy out the illustrative quotations that he had marked in books. His success let him wrote several revised editions during his life.

A Dictionary of the English Language was somewhat large and very expensive as it contained 18 inches (46 cm) tall and nearly 20 inches (50 cm) wide pages but the paper was of the finest quality. No bookseller could possibly hope to print this book without help. So, the publishers charged nearly £1,600 for A Dictionary of the English Language more than Johnson had been paid to write the book.

How ever Samuel Johnson did it he is truly a genious. As a teenager reading the dictionary was one of my favorite past time thing. My purpose of reading was to know the meaning of words to be used in essay writing. To this day I still keep a pocket dictionary at hand reach even though you can now find the meanings of all words on the internet.
