It is said that, Volkswagen AG will drive in the fastest and most expensive car in India with the launch of legendary French car brand Bugatti next year year, a company executive said.

Bugatti Veyron, which can hit a top speed of more than 400 km per hour for the sports and coupe models, will cost anywhere between Rs 5 crore and Rs 12 crore when it hits the Indian roads by the mid-2010, said the executive requesting anonymity.

Volkswagen, which has become the world’s largest carmaker with its takeover of Porsche, will import Bugatti cars.

When contacted, Kurt Rippolz, head of communication Volkswagen India, refused to confirm the development. “It’s the independent decision of every brand to decide on the India strategy. The brand checks on the viability and whether there is a market potential, and then decides on its launch plans,” he said.

The German carmaker, which has a dozen brands in its portfolio including Scania and Man, is keen on bringing its high-end products such as the Porsche, Bentley and Lamborghini into India. The company is looking at ways of using its existing networks and systems to support these brands, the first executive said.

Currently, brands like Porsche and Bentley are imported by independent dealers.

But given Indian consumers growing liking to luxury products and the country’s high growth rate, many marquee carmakers such as BMW, Mercedes-Benz and even Volkwagen (Beetle and Touareg) are importing vehicles.

India, the world’s second fastest growing car market, is expected to see premium car sales touch the 10,000 mark in 2010.

Volkswagen has of late become very aggressive in the Indian market by driving in a number of its models including the Beetle and the soon-to-be-launched Polo hatchback, backed by a high-decibel advertisement campaign across all media.

But the brand was hit when the World War II started. In 1963, Bugattis sold the company to Hispano-Suiza that was primarily interested in Bugatti’s airplane parts business.

In 1982, Romano Artioli, a finance broker and auto dealer, brought Bugatti trademarks rights and set up Bugatti Automobili SpA. But after rolling out only one model -- EB 110 in 1991 on the 100th birthday of Ettore Bugatti – the company filed for bankruptcy in 1995.

Volkswagen bought the brand name in 1998 and founded Bugatti Automobile SAS in the very next year. Over the last decade, it has rolled out a number of models including Bugatti EB 118, EB 218 and Bugatti 18.3 Chiron. In 2004, it launched two-door super sports car Veyron 16.4, named after French racing driver Pierre Veyron who won the 24 Hours of Le Mans with a Bugatti Type 57 in 1939. The Veyron debuted in China and Russia in 2007.

The carmaker recently unveiled the Bugatti Galibier 16C concept, which will be launched globally by 2013. The Galibier, touted as the most powerful four-door automobile in the world will be far more expensive that the Veyron at around $3.5 million.

Though India is the second largest market in the world at the moment for car makers, do cars like these find buyers. 5-12 crore price range is not small, and even infrastructure wise we don't have roads that can match or support these sort of cars. What do you think people.

I don't think our roads, our traffic will support these cars. Moreover, except for a countable few people may not dare to purchase such expensive cars, considering the social outlook in this country. This article is very inforamtive, but it has not excited me, probabaly bcoz I am an ordinary Indian!

hi everybody its gaurav vasudeva this side i dnt think that a brand named as bugatti gonna hit indian drive just because if anybody owns a car of international brand then it only pays for his own status symbolisation not for being a car lover czuse of what there is a decreasing levell been observed in the sae of imported brands like jaguar volvo and even lamborghinni in india i dnt say that we indians dnt have or own these cars but matter of fact is this that these cars are only used for status symbol in india rest if sumbody have diffrent approach to this matter then must try i just can say this much

Karthik what you said is true, its of no use seeing growth in one side we should grow on both sides to be balanced. These cars will not suit Indian roads till we develop our infrastructures. Its of no use getting so expensive car which can run 400 km per hour and driving it at 60 km. So this is not the right time to launch these cars.

Indian roads needed total revammping to adapt these high end cars (which will consume years and years) only suitable for people who can afford to keep it as as a symbol for their status

ya this is good news for those who like sporty (high speed bird)& luxury cars, but at the same time our infrastrure (roads) want grow mutually as per automobile growth , main diffrence between western country and india is , road condition and automobile growth they developed equally , in india not like that ,so overall indians think about mutual growth, not for this topic, in future like trafic, pollution, all the things we want to consider......

VEYRONS in India seem more like a publicity stunt from VW for a brand building exercise.AFAIK VEYRON'S are not made in RHD, they are limited only to LHD'S.Does that mean the LAW is changing in India,I dont think so.
Launching something this expensive, or atleast talk about it openly, then the general public will think favourably about VW as "hey if they can launch such an expensive car in India those guys will be good".

We do not have the infrastructure or the large enough sales figures to drive this car in. VW could not manage to drive in sales for the Touareg and the Pheaton and they want to get in the toughest seller the Veyron is like a joke.
Reportedly the Industrialist who runs the Maybach 62, has sent it back to the UK citing driveability issues on roads out here and remember this car is without "4 turbo chargers and 1000BHP".

And to top it up the cheapest car in the world "TATA NANO" will beat the worlds fastest car effortlessly when dodging the ill fated traffic of ours. Kool..Huh.

Well the Indian consumer still thinks about saving the money and getting the return of value on what they have put their money in. Also the maximum buyers are from middle class and only a few part is of High class (which go for these high priced cars), so the cars which such high price will only get a few takers and will not be able to succeed.
