What will you think and what will be your decision, if you were given the power to debate and decide on that particular issue? Will you allow FDI in Retail, wait for some time or never will allow such investment?. It is the very tough decision to make....
There are two perspective or approahes in answering this question, legislative and economic.
According to legislative approach, foreign direct investment (FDI) in pure retailing is not permitted, the reason being that India will have to lift the ban or face WTO'S 'cross-retaliation' measures, which will deprive it of tariff and trade privileges that are available to India under the new General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade.
Economic Approach: This approach believes that FDI will help in improving the concept of cost -benefit analysis, in Indian pricing market, so entry of FDI in Indian retail should be entertained.
So there is a serious confusion whwether FDI in Indian retail should be allowed or not. Have you ever noticed that such FDI is not related only to economic benefits but also the approach and attitude of Indian seller or marketer.
Will Indian allow the foreign to act as shopkeepers in India?
Obviously views will vary, but majority will not be in support of such kind of investement plans but infact it is subjected to regualtory supervision. India is today the only major economy that still does not permit FDI in retail trade.
The FDI entry in retail will raise the rate of investment as well as help in generating demand for the increased goods and services produced, and these are the key components of achieving GDP of 8-10% per year.
So question for you is that will you allow the entry of retail giants like Walamart, Carrefour, Ahold, JC Penny, et cetera to enter India for easy achievement of booming GDP?
