Yesterday night, in Mayapuri in west Delhi, five people fell seriously ill after being exposed to some “radioactive material”, reportedly present in medical waste equipment at a scrap dealer’s shop. The skin of two persons reportedly turned completely black. They also had burn injuries and rashes all over their bodies. Police said the victims had been exposed to radiation for the past few days. These people were sleeping in a room where the medical waste equipment had been stored. They showed allergic reactions and started vomiting when exposed to the radiation. We have cordoned off the area around the factory as a precautionary measure.

They were sent to All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS). Preliminary investigations revealed the waste material had come from a city hospital. A team of experts were sent to the factory where the incident took place and the police were investigating the source of the medical equipment. We have seized the equipment and sent it for further examination. We are taking the help of researchers and experts to know what caused the radiation. The shop is located in a congested locality and police suspect that more people could be affected..

In this regard, I would like to ask you all, what should the government do to avoid this kind of furthur accidents?

Hello, Regarding Medical waste private hospital and government hospital should follow proper guidelines and to clear the entire waste without causing inconvenient to public. The health department should monitor these things periodically. Regret to mentioned that we dint have any system and responsibility. It is better to correct ourself and learn to do better in future.

First of all knowingly well that there was radioactive medical waste in the room, these persons should not have been allowed to sleep in that kind of store room. Secondly, it is the duty of the owner of the factory to write a sign board on the room as the room was highly radioactive. Factories are subject to many laws presently where people are required to be shielded away from hazardous material. prevention is always better than cure. The Occupier/owner of the Factory can be booked under the existing laws. Every where government is not required to take action. It is the boundoned duty of the occupier/owner of Factory premises to guard the people/workers from hazardous material stored in the factory, if at all it was required to be stored. The owner/occupiers could have taken care of disposal of that radioactive material within time as may be required appropriately in chemical world. Looks like it has not been done. This is sheer contributory negligence on the part of the people sleeping in the said room and the owners/occupiers of the factory.

Hi Saumya please add your argument on right side. Though I do not know why do you think so? Corruption, population or anything else .. is it making less happy in person? Culture and languages make it more colourful than anything else.
