It rained heavily last night in Assam. This triggered flood. More than 75K people were shifted to make-shift camps. Up to 800 villages in four districts - Lakhimpur, Dhemaji, Sonitpur and Jorhat - have been hit by the floods so far.

A Central Water Commission bulletin said the Brahmaputra river and its tributaries were flowing above the danger mark in at least eight places.

Sadly many people have to take shelter in raised platforms, on railway tracks, and in government schools and offices, so far untouched by the floods.

Gushing waters have breached at least four vital mud embankments in the state, besides snapping road links. National Highway 52 in eastern Assam has been severely affected.

A vast stretch of the Kaziranga National Park has come under water, forcing forest guards to move out of the sanctuary and making animals run for their safety.

The situation is worrisome and we are helpless. What can be done when mother nature does this to us?!!

This is a regular problem every year in the monsoon they lose close to 20-25 families every year but t government is not taking any necessary steps to over come this issue either they need to allocate a different place for the live hood when they know that this is been happening.
Govt shoulld come our with concrete solutions to overcome this problem.Govt shuld invest in big infrastructure and township planning project along with PPP model with private players so such natural calamities related to warer can be overcomed. Also govt has established national disaster authority which can train people in remote areas for emergency evacuation while situtaiton is out of control.

Thanks,Malika for referral. When we do not have solution,we have reason to obtain semblance of satisfaction. The fact is rain furry takes toll every year. The government sounds alert and matter ends. There are experts available in India whose services can be hired to chalk out plans for extending help to people in advance.

Assam government today sounded an alert across the state after flood waters breached embankments and submerged roads and houses in Lakhimpur, Dhemaji and Sonitpur districts, affecting around 2.5 lakh people, Incessant heavy rains in Arunachal Pradesh and the affected districts triggered the first wave of floods with 75,000 people being displaced as their dwellings were washed away, more pathetic Incessant heavy rains in Arunachal Pradesh and the affected districts triggered the first wave of floods with 75,000 people being displaced as their dwellings were washed away

@ Laxman, As we all know the greatest civilizations of the world flourished along the riverside. Nile, Euphrates, Yangtze, Indus, Brahmaputra etc. If China builds the Dam and the course of The Brahmaputra is changed, the whole stretch of fertile land from Dibrugarh to Dhubri will be barren and people will suffer the greatest famine India has ever seen...:)

And oh yes! Most of the people die of "MALARIA", I do not see any preventive action being taken by the Government in this matter.:(

Well, the situation gets worst in Assam every year due to heavy inundation of low-lying areas and major human settlement gets affected as I have faced the fate of deluge with others. The most important thing to be noticed is the aftermath, diseases like cholera, typhoid, dysentery, diarrhea is common as proper medical facilities are far-fetched and the relieve provided is inadequate, rampant corruption amongst the Government servants adds insult to the injury.

Thank you very much for the referral, Mallika :)

Thanks Malika for referral. It is still 1% less rain fall in Assam. We do every thing wrong with mother nature and she gives back some.

I think our task force is capable enough to take care of such natural calamity.

we have an excellent PDS system with vigilante Mr.Thomas at helm. he will deliver.
nature disasters will be part of our life and with more frequency. what policy is hurting food production is with its NAREGA for votebank politics, it should be restricted to dryland/uneployed areas and also in non farming periods. we are making a new class of lazy laggards with this policy hurting our agronomy. its a social issue should be looked at holistically...

Thanks Malika for referral. In spite of its recurrence, the Government of India, especially, Central Water Commission and the Ministry of Environment fail to take pro-active measures to protect the lives in advance. Brahmaputra is an unwieldy river, if crossed the danger mark, causes severe devastation!
