Toostep has had many a debate on gender issues. Some of the questions that have been asked are "Are men better managers than women?" and "Do men find it difficult to work under female bosses?"

My initial response was that gender is irrelevant to business, but after reading an article by Kevin Hogan and watching a video interview with SellingPower publisher Gerhard Gschwandtner and former Careerbuilder.com CSO Mary Delaney discussing this issue “Men are Better at Selling than Women” I have been forced to rethink the issue.

Here's the video I mentioned:

Kevin Hogan in an article titled "Women Ruin Men's Ability To Think" points to a study that shows that only those men higher in testosterone are likely to fall prey to overt sexual distractions.

Men who's ring finger is as long or longer than their index finger are high in testosterone. (This is a pretty useful piece of information when you start to think about it!!)

Now, you might think that women are affected by men in much the same way.

Well, you might think that but only if you are a man.

Very few women are distracted by men.

In fact, the research shows we are about as distracting as a tree or rock.

Men about to play a financial game were shown images of sexy women or lingerie.

The Proceedings of the Royal Society B study found they were more likely to accept unfair offers than men not been exposed to the alluring images.

The suggestion is that the sexual cues distract the men's thoughts, preventing them from focusing on their task - particularly among those with high natural testosterone levels.

The University of Leuven researchers gave 176 heterosexual male student volunteers aged 18 to 28 financial games to test their fair play.

But first, half the men were shown sexual cues of some kind.

One group of 44 men were given pictures to rate; some were shown landscapes while the rest were shown attractive women.

Another group, of 37 men, were either asked to assess the quality, texture and colour of a bra or a t-shirt.

And a third group of 95 were shown either pictures of elderly women or young models.

Each group was then paired up to play a game where the men had $10, a proposer had to suggest a split, and the other man accepted or rejected the offer.

If the second man accepted the offer, the money was distributed in agreement with the offer. If he rejected it, neither partner got anything.

The game is designed as a lab model of hunting or food sharing situations.

Vulnerable?

The men's performance in the tests showed those who had been exposed to the "sexual cues" were more likely to accept an unfair offer than those who were not.

The men's testosterone levels were also tested - by comparing the length of the men's index finger compared to their ring finger.

If the ring finger is longer, it indicates a high testosterone level.

The researchers found that men in the study who had the highest levels performed worst in the test, and suggest that is because they are particularly sensitive to sexual images.

Dr Siegfried DeWitte, one of the researchers who worked on the study, said: "We like to think we are all rational beings, but our research suggests ... that people with high testosterone levels are very vulnerable to sexual cues.

"If there are no cues around, they behave normally. But if they see sexual images they become impulsive."

He added: "It's a tendency, but these people are not powerless to fight it. "Hormone levels are one thing, but we can learn to deal with it."

The researchers are conducting similar tests with women. But so far, they have failed to find a visual stimulus which will affect their behavior.

Dr George Fieldman, principal lecturer in psychology at Buckinghamshire Chilterns University College, told the BBC News website: "The fact men are distracted by sexual cues fits in to evolutionary experience. It's what they are expected to do.

"They are looking for opportunities to pass on their genes."

He said the study confirmed what had been suspected by many.

"If a man is being asked to choose between something being presented by an attractive woman and an ugly man, they might not be as dispassionate as they could be."

Your take on this?

Very indepth. In fact Viktor the only reason why I have actually avoided REALLY commenting on these issues because the fact is that when Men and Women work together in a workplace there is bound o be sparks and its a very hormonal thing. Men are more prone to being sexually attracted to women because their testosterone allows them to think only by their d***s rather than the brain. Also the vice versa can never be true because most women rely on their instincts to prune themselves and even send signals of liking to a male colleague until they are emotionally secure with the relationship. That is also a very big reason why women are so self assured in a workplace. The laws also protect them. Sexual harassment is not very difficult to slap on a male colleague and women being meticulous by nature can very patiently keep collecting evidence to prove the same. Interestinglu in one study I cannot really put my finger on, I had read that men are more vulnerable in a workplace and insecure where there are women around and particularly where women are bosses! Its like a catch 22!! They have to keep performing, then there are hazards of working together particularly when you have a female boss and who uses all weapons of dressing and olfactory devices that would send the men in a tizzy. Now there is a relation here in the behavior of men and women here and according to the study its purely sexual and charged with secretion of hormones. Men go OTT (Over The TOP) as the organ starts singing a lusty tune whereas the enticer is already set out to catch the next prey and make it SILLY PUTTY! The use of sexual overtures are abundant in such workplaces. Lawyers offices, IT, Advertising, Media, generally any Marketing functionality would mean an office that has testosterone and the feline variety at their desks. On your closing statement, I would say that some men would prefer an ugly man over an attractive woman for professional reasons, but when you take out the work environment that same man would be absolutely a ninny to the slightest of advances by the same attractive woman!! This is so interesting!! Thanks Viktor.

Hi Viktor,
Thanks for refering me, a well researched article. It gives many dimensions to usual men-women debates.
1. We Indians have a habit of portraying Indians as different creatures than other world, mostly western culture. It is true that, we Indians have a centuries old rich culture. But we should not assume that rest of the world follows no culture. And when it comes to three lettered word, all human beings in the world are identical. Same men, same women. Indian are no differnt.
2. This article has also donned upon me how great escape I had. My ring finger is longer than my index finger. Naturally, my testetoron level must be higher. Fortunately, there are no women in our office. What a great escape I had..

@Aditya, the index finger is the fourth finger on your hand, the one next to your thumb, the ring finger is the second finger.

Mr. V.G. Sundar Kumar, I had no intention of making a comment on this insight but you have now forced me to respond to your comment. Firstly, I do not support your entire first paragraph.Secondly I am of Indian descent but also a western woman and I am nothing of what you have said of western women. In future I will appreciate if you will comment in a global way and say some women in other countries and don't limit your thoughts to just western hemisphere.

I might even go one step ahead!! The emulation of the west particularly what happens in the US is being duplicated or replicated or whatever you may wish to call it, is happening here. The work culture, the habits, the language, the music, the films everything that is closely associated with our lives has a HUGE influence of US in it!!
The BPO work culture is nothing but an exact replica of the culture in US!! So I think Viktor what applies there can safely apply here too. Why even the management gurus talk the same language and tactics and strategy!!

Mr. Sunder Kumar, you forget that today we are living in a global village, a cultural melting pot. You cannot deny that a study undertaken in the west has no bearing on Indian society....Men will me men, geography and culture not withstanding. Besides, Indian society has always been hypocritical and in denial about issues related to gender and sex. One the one hand, we talk about women emancipation and on the other, we have been killing our unborn daughters. Progressive political reforms such as the women reservation bill are long pending due to male chauvinism.

Dear Mr. Viktor,

The article is very interesting. Is all the research done on this subject pertaining to the Western culture? A vast difference would has to be observed in documentation of history, cultural traditions and changing trends in the present scenario, when this subject is handled from an Indian’s perspective view point. In western’s culture, women have liberty to drink in midst of men since ages and not considered a taboo. Kissing in public is allowed. Dating and prostitution, premarital sex, live in relationship are not illegal. We have never encouraged such behavior of Indian women because we believe it is against our tradition. Nevertheless, to day we are gradually progressing to get imbibed with Western culture. We had defined the roles of husband, wife, children through our ancestors. A woman’s role as a wife was to be confined to household activities, get instructions from dominant male, and also to take care of the children welfare. Hence in turn it became necessary for the children to support their parents during old age. With the emerging Western culture, we notice that many parents are forced to shift to old age homes in desperation and sons unethically murdering their parents for financial gains. In Western countries, the parents are not dependents on the children during old age, although they are brought up during childhood. In my opinion the ongoing research in Women influence on men due to sexual attraction is not applicable to us in the present era. I do have no hesitation that in the long run it may have adverse impact.

Sexual clues, men being attracted by women have acquired phenomenal status and are an important tool for exploitation as well as business strategies. It need not have to become an obsession or affect one’s mind, when men are working under a women boss. Except for physiological & biological differences, habits, limitations, men and women are both human beings, considered to be at equal status concerning their existence and performance. Both are competitors and contributors to any competent event or subject. By his or her constitution certain fields or professions have become popular amongst them and certain fields are not suitable for them. Some years back women were considered impracticable for heading manufacturing industries. Now a days we see many leading Industrialists, technocrats and other coveted positions occupied by women. There have been many IAS women officers in the Administrative cadre who have no difficulties in even relocating independently at places other than their husband’s location for discharging their work related matters. No documented evidence or abuses are reported from the employees working under them.
