Population Census is an important exercise undertaken by the Govt. of India every 10 years.

The data is used for all planning purposes, including health services, transportation, education, employment, rehabilitation,  etc.

Enumerators will visit each of our homes any day between 9th & 28th Feb. ,2011.

This Census one of the main focuses is to get the data on number of people with disabilities in the country. Question No. 9 is about disability.  Each of us will have to say ‘Yes’ or ‘No’ to this question.  If the answer is Yes, we should share the type of disability (1) Seeing; (2) Hearing (3) Speech (4) Movement (5) Mental Retardation (6) Mental Illness (7) Any Other (8) Multiple Disability.

Please ensure if any member in the household has any disability or chronic medical condition; please ensure that information is noted there.

This data will help in creating rehab/facilities/support services which are almost non existent today, as we do not have accurate numbers. Individual information will be kept confidential and only aggregate data will be made pubic.

At last, the disabled fora's fight over the years to include this aspect in the enumeration list in Population Census is vindicated. Thanks to their continued fight, the last discussion I attended was in Vigyan Bhavan when they pleased to the Judiciary their plight which was attended by the array of luminaries from Judiciary, including the then Chief Justice of India, Chief Justice of High Court, Judges of High Courts across the country and the civil society representatives from across the country consisting of experts from medical field, media, academic and other social activists. At last, the Government has relented to incorporate enumeration of their status in the ongoing Census!

Thank u for referral. This is important for planning and other agencies to carry out their planning. NGOs, commercial organisations, large scale producers and differnt players of the economy gets necessary input to plan and execute more perfectly.

Agree, census is an important demographic tool. But the results should be treated as such also instead of being manipulated

In this system of corrupt politics, nobody takes the common man into acCount! If, of all the beautiful things on this earth, the govt. is trying to count us, then let's get counted! :) Just joking.
It's the responsibility of every citizen of the country to get counted in this census as it is the only way to say "I belong to India!"

Thanks for referring Priya.
