Happiness Index

New year is round the corner, so are the wishes from every near and dear ones, wishing everyone for the happy and prosperous New Year!

Have we ever thought "Happiness" lies not in material gains, but in "General Well-Being" of every citizen of this country. Thierry Mathou, French Diplomat and Bhutan-watcher, once said about Bhutan, the country's unique "cultural imperative and political objective" is to achieve a "balance between spiritual and material aspects of life". He also said this was a  chance to build "a model Gross National Happiness or GNH community" that would grow vegetables on rain-fed soil and make the peopole "self-sufficient and feed themselves".

The sad truth is the science of happiness remains a migraine-inducing puzzle for  national leaders. Hardly anyone has got it right, mostly because its unhappily easy to go wrong.

dear murli sir, thx for bringing up this issue - it has tremendous amount for us to benefit from. my personal experience is based on few fairly close encounters with the people & the culture - spaced over nearly three decades. its true that with existing socio-economic pressures it appears next to impossible for governments to be able to replicate the system. notwithstanding, there is a lot for us to pick up on an individual level; with tremendous benefits. i would recommend a book by linda leamings titled "married to bhutan" - a really good eye opener to the culture, a great reading experience, and full of lessons if one wants to help himself. my second recommendation would be to those who travel to the middle / south east asia for a holiday - just once try a trip closer home - come back with stars in your eyes - bewildered by a simple people (we don't understand "simple"), an enchanting environment, and stories you will fail to stop telling your friends. a learnt a few things i'll share - i'll admit that one can not make these a "rule" in our conditions - but evev if one tries to follow them most of the time; it works. 1. whenever you have to eat, "sit down". it means even if its a burger, eat it slowly "sitting down" not on the run. 2. don't honk. just don't. use it for emengencies or when traffic rule require you to - never to hurry things. one reaches destination at about the same time but it helps the nerves - particularly your own. 3. don't litter - you may not pick up others' garbage but just don't add your own - try it for three days - it gives wonderful feeling at the end of the day. 4. try "smiling" at others - it does wonders to your own stress levels. hoo ! i could go on for ever. all this gives a boost to one's own levels of happiness - and many of us do something like this, will it have effects at the collective levels !! and some of us may be saved taking stress management capsule too. i know this has become a little long - but i did warn you about "stories". lastly - when you next go past someone selling flowers - don't just "walk past" - just stop for a few minutes and look at the flowers - then walk. who ever said that in today's urbanised world we have no space or time for gardening !!! with regards to all
PS. in the lighter vein - the govt of bhutan doesn't pay me for this. i get paid if even one of us feels i made a atom worth of a difference.

Happy New Year to you murlidharan sir. Agree with murthy sir, it was time where people live with satisfaction, happiness and together in family. But, today people want to live independent, live stress full life and unhappy or dissatisfying..

Time is playing with people and people are playing with time ..

Four, five decades back everybody was happy. Almost all of them are "self sufficient and feed themselves". With the changing lifestyles and technological developments, life lost its original meaning.
