Hare & Tortoise

We all know about this story, which we read in our 2nd or 3rd standard. Still it is not be completed unless we reach to a conclusion or we can learn some management methodology. It continues…

This story begins with:

One day, one bet between hare and tortoise to reach a destination, whoever will reach first there, will win. Tortoise told hare that he can not run fast but he will try to win this race. Race starts at scheduled time; hare runs fast as possible as he could. Just before the destination he estimated that he could reach within five minutes time and tortoise could not reach to this place at least in next four hours. He thought that if he wins the race in tortoise presence it will be fun full. Hare decided to take rest below the shade of tree, which is very near to target, and went to sleep. Now look the continuous and steady efforts of the tortoise. Tortoise never left behind and continued to walk, he reached to the destination, saw hare was slipping, cross the hare and reached to the target. Tortoise woke up the hare and said he won.

Hare felt guilty that though he is having such a strength but due to silly mistake of ignorance he lost the race.

We learned “ Slow and steady wins the match” in our books,

but management tells us “never do the silly mistakes, do not over estimates our strengths and competitors weaknesses.”

Chapter 2 starts from here.

Hare learned that he had committed a mistake and he should rectify it. He again went to tortoise and asked for again a race to reach a same destination. Tortoise agreed.

On scheduled time race started, now hare with the same enthusiasm run fast as possible as he could make, he was surprised that every mile stone he found a tortoise. Even before a last mile stone he found again a tortoise, but he run fast and won the race.

Tortoise was knowing that with his current strength he could not win the race therefore he used his friends at all mile stones. Here we call it “DUPLICACY OR MULTIPLING OF STRENGTHS.”

We learned “ Believe on our own strengths and effort lasting accordingly. Even if your competitor is clever and can go for any limit to win the race.” “NEVER SAY DIE APPROACH”

Chapter 3 starts from here

Now at this time tortoise find himself very helpless, as he was clever, again he decided to challenge hare for a race. He went to hare and asked him again for a race but on a different route. Unknowingly, hare ready for that.

On schedule time race started. Hare run fast as possible as he could and stopped at the side of the river. There was no way to cross the river; hare was stuck. Tortoise slowly moved to the river, crossed it and reached to destination. Tortoise won.

Lesson “ never jumped into immediately – like hare, study the situation and environment in which you are working”. “Utilize your unique strengths, set your own path to achieve the goals” – like tortoise.

Chapter 4 starts from here

Now both became good friends, hare had thrown an idea; asked tortoise “ why not both of us jointly do this race on same route and find out how we can meet it before time.”

Tortoise agreed; on land hare kept tortoise on his shoulder and reached to the river, in river tortoise brought him and crossed the river. When they reached they found that due to joint efforts they met the target unexpectedly early.

Lesson “Unity works always”, “try to minimize the weaknesses by adding other’s strengths”. Acquisition, mergers are the solution to fight with rivals or competitors.

Pepsico South California was facing the problem of business % reduction in 1967. Their rivals Coke had introduced its soft drinks in 1962 and captured the Pepsico market  by 30%. Newly joined Pepsico COO asked for market research report. He went through the all documents which was exhibiting the comparison of soft drinks only. It was like, for soft drinks

Year

Pepsico market share

Coke Market Share

1962

67%

1963

1964

15%

1965

60%

26%

1966

31%

1967

He elaborated to his colleagues “ do not go for what Coke is doing, see what is the size of beverage market”.

Team came back with again a chart was exhibiting that 100% of beverage market is having distribution of, only 28% share of soft drinks, 10% of hot coffee, 15% of cold coffee, hardly 2% of tea, 15% of cold milk or shake, and rest for beer and wine. Coffee and other drinks had been delivered at ready counter except beer and soft drinks. These are available only in the hotels and restaurants.

COO decided to explore this beverage market instead of fighting for soft drink market with rivals. He had got designed coin freezers and introduced in the retail market. Sale boosted up like anything.

Why it is connected to hare and tortoise story???

Always look for our strengths and weaknesses first than compare it with competitor. It will give you different way of thinking for achieving the goals. Winners always do the same thing but in different manner.

The only problem with the original Hare & Tortoise story is.. if your winning is dependent on somebody elses mistakes... then who are you fooling?

Thanks for the referral Mr.Nitin Ji.
In deed it is a nice moral story to be noted by all.... very thought provoking...
One should not underestimate others and it should not be forgotten that if one points with his finger on others, the remaining fingers point at himself only. Hence one should aim/focus on himself only to achieve things without damaging or underestimating others. In practical one man's weakness becomes somebody's strength. Hard work, involvement, and perseverance make people to succeed in their assignment.

Nice insight Nitin Sir. Thanks for the referal.

In today's scenario, the Hare and the Tortoise, belong to different departments of organisations, hence race is less of a probability, yes tortoises of one jungle can sure spread the race news for hares across jungles.

A very good story, i have been using the story to teach the Team Work and to focus on strengths....
A good story, in support of "Win-Win" Strategy.
On more brain storming, further lessons may be derived from the story.
It took Hare & tortoise 4 races to realise importance of team work. In real life, destiny do not give these many chances. The hare & tortoise, who learn their lessons just after one race, win the final tournamnent.
In competition of Coke & Pepsico, Pepsico should realize that, competitor's group, other than Coke is playing major role in reduction of their market share.

We know that the hare commited a mistake only on retrospection, in hindsight after the event not during the race, whereas during the race it was energy optimisation, tactical planning, zero wastage, operationalisation of resources recovery procedures and the like.
Time honoured wisdom has to be understood in its correct reference to its context

John D'Cruz says: We know that the hare commited a mistake only in hind sight, after the event, not during the race whereas during the race it was optimised usage of energy resources, operations analysis, tactical planning, strategy implementation and opererationalisation of recovery procedures towards spent resources resources.

The thinking of performance managers is changing. At least two sports persons, Usain Bolt and Sania Mirza, have expressed views reflecting this change.

Traditionally, we conduct review meetings, compare the performance of various field / regional personnel and try to grade performance; we also have such reviews to formulate strategies. More individualistic appraisals would yield better results. Gathering and using knowledge of all participants should, of course, be there. But it is not for performance evaluation.

Ultimately it is my improvement of my performance alone matters. This is a continuous exercise. Why should I draw the energy for doing this, from the level of performance of others?

The motivation to improve need not necessarily come from my observation of the performance of my competitors. Their performance details are only part of my data bank. The spur should come from within to excel myself. The traditional competitive approach creates only fear / inhibition in your minds about others and their efficiency. This, to some extent, saps my energy, and also diverts me from my own line of action. Weak-minded persons start thinking of pulling others back to prove themselves. This is all unnecessary.

The motivation should flow from the thought I must improve, I MUST IMPROVE, I MUST IMPROVE...

In fact, Mr. Punit Gupta and Mr. Kirit Patel have already conveyed views from this point of view.

Yes Mr. Aras, i fully agree with this, as this is rightly comented "Successful people don't do different things, they do the thing differently". Their decision is base on analyse the situation, Circumstances, need and priority. If you consider all the above factors then only you are bound to make right decisions.

Mr. Aras Welcome Back !!
What I believe is any corporate policy and plan which is typical of the industry is doomed to mediocrity. Where this is not so, it should be possible to demonstrate that all other competitors are at a distinct disadvantage.
