Following a recent study that showed home births are three times riskier for newborns than hospital births, a leading medical journal has said that women do not have 'the right' to choose to give birth at home because it risks the health of their babies.

Doctors have told the Lancet that pregnant women had the right to choose how and where to give birth - but the rights of their unborn child must always take priority.

The editorial said that findings reported in the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology 'provides the strongest evidence so far that home birth can, after all, be harmful to newborn babies'.

The study found that babies born at home were far more likely to die from heart and breathing problems, which could be because they are not properly monitored for signs of distress or treated in time in an emergency.

The research covered 549,607 births and showed the average mortality rate of babies born in hospital was 0.3 per 1,000 births, but this rose to one per 1,000 births for those born at home, reports The Daily Mail.

"Women have the right to choose how and where to give birth, but they do not have the right to put their baby at risk," an editorial in The Lancet said.

"Home delivery is an option for mothers with uncomplicated pregnancies, provided they are advised of the risks involved, have one-to-one midwife care that includes good resuscitation skills and accreditation by a local regulatory body, and live in a location that allows quick access to obstetric care.

"Hospital delivery should be the preferred method of delivery for high-risk pregnancies, even though it is not without risks," the editorial added.

If the pregnancy is not complicated & with trained midwifery assistance & obstetric support available there is no harm in going for Home-birth. Not only exorbitant hospital charges, exploiting the innocent patients/would be Mothers to the maximum.
& most of the time hospital doctors insist for Cesarean Delivery without giving sufficient time for Labor. Normal Delivery Charges ranges from Rs.3000/- to 6000/- & Cesarean Delivery charges rs.25,000/- to 35000/- in moderate hospitals. The baby catching of infection from the hospital surrounding is much more faster than at the clean home surrounding. Home Birth will save lot of inconvenience & travel time for attendants. More importantly, women can be attended by the family immediately after
Delivery rather than putting her to the mercy of the nurses & ayahs.

Even in UK the people are more encouraged & preferred for Home Birth & suggests husband's presence to assist during delivery along with medical staff will hv psychological benefit & quick recovery for both Mother & Baby. So let the mother will decide. Not these greedy & unethical commercial hospitals, who are exploiting the people to the hilt. Medical fraternity should care for people not scare the people,in connivance with Pharma guys & cos.

Not only in India but in several other countries home child delivery is in practice. However, it risks baby's life. Thus it is always preferable to go for hospital delivery than that of home delivery.
