How the other’s bad behviour helps to our success?

Just sharing an experience:

I was the process owner of a project worth around Rs 14 million. It was an expansion project, coming up in the same premises. Therefore, execution team was formed from there maintenance and planning people.

Since I was involved right from the beginning of the project say planning, layout, setting up the operational specifications and specific production requirements, translation of these specifications into technical terms etc., so; I organized a meeting of concerns persons and drafted their requirement. Initially they took it as a funny part because I was so junior in-front of them. When they judged my sincere efforts, they started taking interest into the subject. Finally we nicely drafted the proposal and a project charter based on their specific requirement along with equipments layout.

And proposal hit the bull eye, Management accepted it and I became the process owner for this project. I got an appreciation from Management for this effort in general meeting.

Real story starts from here.

One old man, who had given his 25 yrs life to the company, became a criticizer for my activities. He was from electrical side, I am a mechanical engineer hence did not know about electrical at that time; so he started blaming that how the incompetent person can take decision in his domain. I was knowing that this was the weak area of my curriculum and I may be failed while taking decision on this subject matter because of no exposure.

My boss (mechanical engineer) and technical advisor (civil engineer) told me that I can do it in much better way since consultant is involved in it. They boosted me to do it alone, not depend on others, because they are experienced in execution not in execution planning. I thought of it and started going through the basic electrical books. Within two months time; interaction with consultant and help of books, started reading electrical drawings of the project.

During design stage of the project, I got a very good understanding of the electrical side.

One day, this fallow came to me and asked that why I allowed contract persons for laying the cables, which was not on a good route for laying the cables, there I accepted my mistake. He had taken an advantage of this situation (my inability) and went to technical advisor. He also shouted on me and thanked to him that he saved time and money of the company.

When he went back, technical advisor told me, note down the failure and see for alternative solutions, select best out of it and re launch your action plan before management.

When it was investigated; problem was nothing there, just reading of the drawing. Earlier drawing, in which I pointed out the same problem to the consultant had been rectified and given to the contractor for execution and this criticizer was working on the previous drawing. He had not even seen that drawing was different.

After this incident; I learned that every failure has the opportunity. Started working in the same passion.

He did so many things against me, and always I found that there was a learning and also every time I got a good recognition and support from GM, my boss and Technical advisor (my guru).

Finally we accomplished our job within stipulated time and budget.

I realized that for encouragement we need support from top level and for learning; giving our best; we need a criticizer.

KABIRDAS (a Saint, an poet) – I always follow his philosophy for success.

“Nindak Niyre Rakhiye, Aangan kuti chhibaye.”

Hi Nitin, I must thank you very much for sharing such a learning experience. It's easy to talk morals or write morals. We rarely find people who patiently and silently follow morals. Also it's much more easy for all of us reading, to learn from a practical case rather than reading volumes and volumes in theory. I must congratulate you for your perseverence and coming out in flying colors as a winner. I know how tough and stressful it is to take the risk of failure that is falsely projected and cautioned by your criticiser. By chance if you had failed, due to any other reason also, he would have created a hell for you. Even that happened, in my opinion you should take it easy as long as you have put your good efforts dont bother about the outcome. Great. Keep sharing such things.

Very good experience you have shared with us. It is true that unless there is some resistance/criticism from others, life will not be charming. The criticism by others are the stepping stone for the success, because which gives the insight and the motivation to convert the challenges into results. All in the game in our profession. Good experience sharing Mr. Nitin,
Challenges at the early days of the career will help
mould the real winners.
In my young days, I always liked to experiment and do things
in a different way. The elders in the field were not
supporive unless I followed their footsteps. Being fed up I
approached a mentor at difficult times. I quote below what he
told me once. "See young chap, what one fool can do,
every other fool also can do, but not what a wise man does"
When confronted, I always remembered his words and went on
with what I thought best and mostly it served me well in my
career. So, hear to the elders but follow your mind and learn
to accept failures with courage while rejoicing in success.

Thanks for sharing Mr Nitin,
Just like the saying goes-"A friend In Need Is A Friend Indeed", i personally believe that SOME ONE WHO CRITICIZES US IS OUR BEST FRIEND. S/he is telling us our mistakes on our face, and indirectly giving us the opportunity to rectify them and utilize the experience to our advantage.
We usually get angry at these people and tend to overlook them, where as if we properly listen to them we can see the hidden advice which is behind "Sarcasm" & "Criticism".

Great nitin, this experience of yours is such a great learning for all others out there. The best way to accept failure is to assess the damage, and figure out how you would do it differently in the future and not make the same mistake twice. If you look at failure as a learning experience (as all the inventors did), then you will welcome failure as a growing experience. Also, if there is any collateral damage to your failure, be sure you admit to others your mistake and do what you can to make ammends, fix it, or take responsibility for it in any way appropriate. The biggest failure is giving up. As there is a famous saying"there are no failures , there are just feedbacks.

Truly a great learning anecdote. I felt I spent most of such time rebuking my critic in my solitude and working it out in pressure. Sometimes succumbing to it and quitting. You spent the time learning things and accepting your mistakes. May be that's what made you different. Truly great!

When people make mistakes, the last thing they need is discipline. It's time for encouragement and confidence building. The job at this point is to restore self-confidence. Piling on during a weak moment can force people into a vortex. I have seen it happen to strong, bright, and self-confident managers of million-rupees businesses. They were doing fine in good times but then missed an operating plan or made a bad deal. And self-doubt began to creep in. It's a terrible thing to see. Few ever recover from the vortex. I have tried to do everything to help people through it - or better yet, avoid it. A leader should be able to sense when to hug and when to kick. Arrogant people who refuse to learn from their mistakes have to go. But we must help good people who are clearly eating themselves out over an error.
