How the other’s bad behviour helps to
our success?
Just sharing an experience:
I was the process owner of a
project worth around Rs 14 million. It was an expansion project, coming up in
the same premises. Therefore, execution team was formed from there maintenance
and planning people.
Since I was involved right
from the beginning of the project say planning, layout, setting up the
operational specifications and specific production requirements, translation of
these specifications into technical terms etc., so; I organized a meeting of
concerns persons and drafted their requirement. Initially they took it as a
funny part because I was so junior in-front of them. When they judged my
sincere efforts, they started taking interest into the subject. Finally we nicely
drafted the proposal and a project charter based on their specific requirement
along with equipments layout.
And proposal hit the bull
eye, Management accepted it and I became the process owner for this project. I
got an appreciation from Management for this effort in general meeting.
Real story starts from here.
One old man, who had given
his 25 yrs life to the company, became a criticizer for my activities. He was
from electrical side, I am a mechanical engineer hence did not know about
electrical at that time; so he started blaming that how the incompetent person
can take decision in his domain. I was knowing that this was the weak area of
my curriculum and I may be failed while taking decision on this subject matter
because of no exposure.
My boss (mechanical engineer)
and technical advisor (civil engineer) told me that I can do it in much better
way since consultant is involved in it. They boosted me to do it alone, not
depend on others, because they are experienced in execution not in execution
planning. I thought of it and started going through the basic electrical books.
Within two months time; interaction with consultant and help of books, started
reading electrical drawings of the project.
During design stage of the
project, I got a very good understanding of the electrical side.
One day, this fallow came to
me and asked that why I allowed contract persons for laying the cables, which
was not on a good route for laying the cables, there I accepted my mistake. He
had taken an advantage of this situation (my inability) and went to technical
advisor. He also shouted on me and thanked to him that he saved time and money
of the company.
When he went back, technical
advisor told me, note down the failure and see for alternative solutions, select
best out of it and re launch your action plan before management.
When it was investigated;
problem was nothing there, just reading of the drawing. Earlier drawing, in
which I pointed out the same problem to the consultant had been rectified and
given to the contractor for execution and this criticizer was working on the
previous drawing. He had not even seen that drawing was different.
After this incident; I
learned that every failure has the opportunity. Started working in the same
passion.
He did so many things against
me, and always I found that there was a learning and also every time I got a
good recognition and support from GM, my boss and Technical advisor (my guru).
Finally we accomplished our job within stipulated time and budget.
I realized that for encouragement we need support from top level and for learning; giving our best; we need a criticizer.
KABIRDAS (a Saint, an poet) – I always follow his philosophy for success.
