Evolution: Historically, Western management knowhow has evolved from the Caucasian gene that’s produced incredible inventions that go against nature. Light was invented to brighten up nights, clothes to cover up human bodies, aircrafts to hit the skies with, pacemakers to fix an ailing heart. Western countries also exercised immense power over several countries in the world in the last few centuries. Their commanding position emerged from their capacity to thwart, lead and rule diverse kinds of people through Royalty to slavery and colonialism.

Business management took inspiration from this socio-politico-economic control they’d assumed, and several models were innovated to scale up business. They experienced trials, tribulations, tests and failures. Then their fallacies got proven, models got established and their applications in business became successful. In business culture, the West is quite intolerant of mistakes.

Why are Western business models so good and sustainable? You may argue that there’s been a fall in the last few years. But it’s not been as disruptive as the 1930s which led to World War II, post which they returned with invention after invention that have dramatically changed the world.

Since Medieval times, European monarchs and the Church have sought power for achieving living and governing comfort. A Roman Emperor’s first priority on conquering a new state was to establish a highly efficient water supply system. Just imagine how many thinkers, engineers, constructers and workers had to work at that time to construct 220 meters high brick structures surrounding a city for water supply. Those systems are still strongly maintained today as historical monuments. They prove ingenuity in framing technological advances over different eras. The Romans constructed numerous aqueducts to supply water to cities and industrial sites and to aid in their agriculture. The city of Rome was supplied by 11 aqueducts with a combined length of 350 kilometres.

When life was becoming boring and incestuous, Europeans went in for world discovery. With a handful of people sailing the high seas, they’d land their ships in different continents and manage to somehow gain enough control to rule over native populations using skills and developed technology. Dominating different countries, they strategically plundered civilizations, became opulent, considered themselves superior and started slavery. Such experience seasoned them on how to enslave, handle or use manpower across the globe for enriching themselves. History says the Chinese explorers discovered North America 69 years before the Europeans did. But they did not invade the country, they merely observed like a tourist and left. That shows the difference between Asians and Europeans in their hunger to rule.

Church was the roadblock: But European inventors did not accept having an easy time at home. Art, science and invention had to fight the Church that disallowed activities not sanctioned by Church authorities. But thinkers defied nature and pressed science and engineering to make incredible inventions. Every century is marked by the kind of shift inventions brought about to provide better comfort for living. The 19th century is represented as the mechanical era, the 20th century brought in the electronic era which shifted to digital technology in the 21st century. Tomorrow they will reverse science to bring alternative solutions to protect the very world they are destroying with wars and environmental pollution. Why and how do they do that?

Action oriented: Western philosophy being rooted in the here-and-now is very action oriented. Every individual wants to accomplish everything in his/her short lifespan of 70 years average. They question life and existence, but in every invention they ingrain a grid metaphor to enable its future continuity. The objective is always to go against nature, disrupt what’s become acceptable, to change the human living condition in search of a new height of mental or physical comfort. They created and abolished slavery, crafted auto-mechanization and now digitalization for a new way of life. Europeans in Europe were never allied, they were parochial. Even today all European countries live their own culture, but came together with the Euro currency to protect being swamped by American and Asian economic power.

When European immigrants went to America, it is possible they created the melting pot of invention translated to business in North America, and revolutionized science and technology. This multi-blend and experienced American society created the business frameworks we use today. They devised the business culture, branding to handling large scale businesses and globalization. History says that it was very difficult to align the two Allied Army Generals, Montgomery with Eisenhower, in World War II. Their commanding styles were totally different. But as per BBC’s archives, coordination was possible only because General Eisenhower was an open-minded American.

Most of the famous American and European global brands have a strong legacy of fundamental or applied innovation or renovation drive. The reality, which I have experienced in Western society, is that renovation means “I change myself” while innovation or invention means “I change the world.” The Japanese and Koreans rigorously followed the Western business process and made a dent in the world with excellence in delivery execution. In the 1970s and 80s, Europeans used to caricature Japanese brands as copy-masters. But Japan or Korea never did present themselves as inventors or innovators; they proved they were best in the world at execution.

When you compare Indian origin enterprises with such references, are there any gaps that need addressing? You often hear of enterprises restructuring or rebranding, but very often this is a feel good exercise, not quite driven for global business requirement. When multi-conglomerate corporations in particular say they are getting ready for globalization, how is it possible to do so without first defining their core? They try expanding into new verticals without having that core competency to grab the emerging opportunity. It’s not always possible for any business to run and sustain merely by investing money and hiring professionals. Till today, leading corporations in the world who drive the trend are all uni-focused on their core, whether it’s Microsoft, Google, Wal-Mart, Apple, Toyota, IBM or Accenture among others. Will unsynchronized Indian conglomerates be able to sustain the effect of being a conglomerate in front of global specialists in each domain? Will their next generation of the business family have the capacity to run a conglomerate, or want to do so?

WE CAN WIN TOO Core competency gets identified when we create benchmark, or quality product service i.e zero error, said easy; for product it may be possible how about service? Well we need to categorize the service/product as B2B B2C, and impose stringent feedback, corrective, redressal Mechanism, not a management doctrine rather follow it at all levels. I / we are responsible for the quality, I we abide by any failure. The quality or zero defect product service is no magic, it lies in the conversation within an organization, and this requires building process, process adherence, compliance and process enhancement, which will produce measured delivery and provide control over product cost, from conception to delivery to its lifecycle. This makes the product service very robust, easy marketability across geographic boundary, to compete with other global product/services. Having well defined process brings transparency; this is where the trouble lies with Indian business management psychology. We are in a phase of evolution from trading to business to process guided transparent error free products/services admired on global stage.

Losers have always excuses.Instead of blaming West,Why don't wake up to transform our country once again into a world leader in science and technology.(Example:Iron Pillar at Mehrauli proves our excellency in metallurgy but today we borrow standard from west) . When we were lighting the world with knowledge, these very countries were witnessing "Dark Ages" .There are lots of facts proving our excellence but the thing is that all these are past. We, at present , are excellent servants and not masters. We just need to wake to master the knowledge as our ancestor did some where in the past.

I think Indians are no less as we see now but since we were under British rule for 200 years proper mindset was lost.

If we look today we are advanced in many fields to top it all "Zero" was invented by India.
About Methew Cherian's categorical comments, "this question of whether we can sustain the way we run business is easy to answer, with a 'NO', I wonder, what was the basis for his answer, as I don't think he can find answer to the question by sitting in a US Universtity (Micigan) when his profile at 'TooStep' does not give even slight indication if he has ever practrically served in any reputed Indian corporate at any time in India.
There is certainly an answer to John Jacob's scornful question, "Will the unsynchronized Indian conglomerates be able to sustain...?"

The answer is definitely 'YES' if the West stops trying to disrupt the progress of India through indirect funding of the extremist activities in the name of aid to the neighboring countries, which is safely being siphoned out in aid of training, arming and infiltration of the extremists. The question arises, from where such outfits get sophisticated arms and other equipments in mass scale, if there is no clandestine support from countries of West?

The world very well knew that Osama was the creation of USA, who had earlier very close relations with one of the ex-President's family that even West's papers have published. John Jacob, may like to read the news with headlines, "Weird News of The Day: Osama Bin Laden is a U.s. Agent" at the following link:
http://newsflavor.com/world/middle-east/weird-news-of-the-day-osama-bin-laden-is-a-u-s-agent/

Read more: http://newsflavor.com/world/middle-east/weird-news-of-the-day-osama-bin-laden-is-a-u-s-agent/#ixzz1PmppFjib

But, when Osama played against USA, only then USA could rise from sleep and he was treated as US enemy #1, not when he was dangerously disturbing peace of other nations.

About Iraq, even British newspapers revealed that when the Oil company 'BP' expreseed its desire, saying, "WE DESPERATELY NEED IRAQI OIL", only thereafter plans were chalked out to invade Iraq on the plea that Iraq was manufacturing and amassing biological, and chemical weapons of mass destruction, while the West could not find any even after Saddam was finished by West. Jacob may like to read the debate at the following Link to know details, if he doesnot believe on that:
http://www.thedebate.org/thedebate/iraq.asp

Now NATO alliance of the West is spreading mass desteruction in the Middle East and Arabic countries where only innocent people are getting incalculable sufferings, harm and loss of lives with attack by Western countries. What he has to say on such sufferings of the mankind in the Middle East and Arabic countries? Although after some time 'wikileaks', like forum may come out with the exact reason behind the attack on Libya, etc., but by that time vast destruction of human lives and wealth of Libya, Seria, and other countries would have been caused.

WEST should adopt the policy of peaceful living with other countries, not misuse its abundant wealth to disturb peace of the world.

This question of whether we can sustain the way we run business is easy to answer, with a 'no'. Our companies are secluded and secretive that it serves nones purpose of intent. The civilization we tend to support is in jeopardy due to our way we do things here. 85% of the population has no grip with the currency they tend to get in their pocket. They work and make a living having no hope for any higher levels of participation in the society and also for their future generation similarly. This is attributable to our inability to manage our currency where only 15% has some grip with it and that too with lot of labor and obsession.
One of the reason can be attributed to our lack of commitment to the economic 'vocabulary' and their meaning. For example what Adam Smith emphasize in his magnum opus and uses as a starting point 'the differentiation of labor' is never even brought into the purvey of any decision making for the 'academiia' and consequently by any Indian trained Economist and political decision maker.
Like the chosen best suggestion in this chain, who accepts the fact that what had been planned or is going on as not of accepted science of management but a labor oriented trial at something, is due to the fact that we don't have an efficient 'commercial and economic culture' meticulously conceived.
Then there is no loss in hope when people like that are willing to try and tomorrow our budding economists and decision makers might resort to incoporate 'differentiation of labor' in their vocabulary and practice as we talk about corruption or infotech now. Also, our academicians beg for more resources to condtion and skill our future work force based on an objective the nation is willing to accept as their own.

This article titled "How the west has won" is really interesting, balanced and forces the reader to think about how a civilization or society became what it is today. Of course this article is not for the "west bashers", those people who blindly oppose and blame the west for everything. It is good to know from the article that the west is an "action oriented" society, where doing a job is more important than just preaching.
No where in the article has the author tried to put down Indians or critizise asians. In fact, the author has consistently lauded the achievements of Japanese and Koreans and has labeled them as "great in execution". All that the author is trying to achieve by writing this article is to make the reader answer a simple question, "Will the unsynchronized Indian conglomerates be able to sustain...". Instead, some readers have tried to guillotine the author by harping on our past glory and offering silly excuses like 'poverty'. What we ought to be doing is to accept the best from the west which includes integrity, hard work etc into our own daily lives and try to catch-up with them rather than offer the routine verbal bashing of ignorance and pity.

TOTALLY BIASED & MISLEADING VIEWS OF THE AUTHOR!

The author seems to be appreciative of the western countries due to some recent archtecture or their management techniques grown MERELY by grabbing of the wealth of the other nations. Even still the western nations are attacking the Arab and Middle East countries just to grab tyheir oil wealth. They are creating a lot of hinderances in development of the developing countries by using their illicitly accummulated wealth by promotiong terrorism through their neighbouring countries.

It clearly seems the author of this article has formed her views with her very little knowledge after reading history of west only for the last two or three centuries.

Clearly, she has not read management policy of Chanakya (370–283 BCE) of India, who was born 370 years earlier than even the Christ of the West. She does not seem to have made any research about the most developed arms and ammunition of Ramayana and mahabharta era of thousands of year ealier, and the developed communication technique that was used by Sanjay to communicate the situation of the fight being fought in the battle between Kaurava's and pandavas of mahhabharat to his king Dhritrashtra. She has not gone through the base of architect of pyramids of Arab. She has not gone through the history of architecture of ancient forts of India. She does not seem to have seen the high altitude forts of Chittorgarh and Gwalior. She also did not care to see the history of architecture of Kutub Minar of India. She has also not learnt about the great wall of china of the ancient times build only out of mud (NOT by stones or bricks), and which is still existing. All these structures were built several centuries before development of the western culture. She also has not read about the Indus Valley civilisation of ancient Harappa & Mohenjadaro (archaeological sites in Punjab, northeast Pakistan) in Indian continent, which was about 6000 & 2600 years, respectively, earlier than even before the christ of the West was born.

She must know, the West started advancing only after 18th century only after it had been using the policy of nomadic life of invading others domains and grabbing their wealth to fill their own coffers.

The author must know that even USA had become the colony of the Britishers and Portugese and had been languishing much behind in development till its independence on July 4, 1776. USA started developing economically only after Industrial Revolution took place in USA between 1820 to 1870.

Even development in Britain also started only after industrial revolution took place in UK between the period from the 18th to the 19th century where major changes in agriculture, manufacturing, mining, transportation, and technology had a profound effect on the socioeconomic and cultural conditions of the times.

The author seemed to be fond of the western management system. She must know that Einstien, the great scientist of the world did not belong to West. He was a jew, who are settled now in Israel. She must also know that even today most of the technological organisations, including the most advanced NASA of USA) depend upon the Indian technologists. In most of the Western Universities Indian Professors are teaching management to the worldwide students of management.

She should also know that even most of the poor people of India are much more talented even from the most talented persons of the West, but they don't get any chance to develop their careers due to their extreme poverty, as education is beyond their reach due to huge cost and other disciminations.

I WOULD LIKE TO ADVISE THE AUTHOR TO FIRST MAKE HER KNOWLEDGE UPDATED, BEFORE WRITING ARTICLES OF SUCH TYPE, WHICH ONLY MISLEAD THE MEMBERS OF THIS FORUM BY DEVELOPING ONLY BIASED VIEWS, RATHER THAN ENHANCING THEIR KNOWLEDGE.

Do you really think so? Let be a person who has not any nationality and you are just standing upon the world and seeing the world. Now Can you really say West has Won? You are seeing all the things happening in the world. you are seeing that west has all the physical facilities like electronics, electrical equipment. you are seeing the people who are living in the western countries and feeling lonely. you are seeing there is a lack of commitment and emotionality in the whole west. can you really say west has won? When you see that depression and anxiety is increasing rapidly and the consuption of relaxant drug is very big in the west. can you really say west has won?

Now the question is why we are back in invention. Then i want to say lets go back about 150 years. British ruled the india over 100 years. why? Can you live in a place where there is no development and no facility for just 20 days. i think no. but they ruled the india about 100 years. why? why they want to rule india for 100 years if there was nothing in india.

India is and India was always rich in terms of science and in terms of everything. So the british were there. But you can say how? All the development was in western countries from bulb to everything. yes it is true in terms of modern science because this has been done thousand years ago in india. take an example, if one city has complete all the development and has all the modern facilities regarding to science or materialistic world. what the people will do? will they just paas their time. no becuase they are educated people they will do research. but what research? all the research has been done regarding to world. Now they try to find out themselves. and That is called yoga and adhytam in these days. as they are finding the way to know ourself coz we were developed. and west was trying to make new things. so at this time we are advance in yoga and they are in material. now if you will see the raciprocal has begun. they are trying to find out themselves and we are towards science. well the rest is in ahead articles...

India is the country where any foreign country will take high income or taking profitable income. Highly corruption and many other factors are responsible behind that. As well Indian people are accepting many foreign brands. So for any foreign country, India is good opportunity. If you will analyse that in last 6 year many tie up between foreign-Indian company's. Majority foreign country is doing strategy tie up with Indian company and establish their business as well as getting success also.

Like that West is being success and won...Thanks Chitra for referal...

No conglomerates in the sub-continent would be able to survive on their own ability to grow big without getting patronage from the political class. This cob-web is closely intertwined and a slight slippery would cost them heavily. We have a glaring example of "Satyam" in front of us. Once any corporation of this magnitude crumbles, it takes ages to revive! Can we ever have a say in the emerging markets in China, never possible! Our system is so weak that we hardly have any say in any of the emerging markets in the world. We have grown exponentially in service space but not in manufacturing verticals. We have hardly created any brand-equity in the manufacturing space.
