How to Change Page Layout, Margins and Line Spacing in Microsoft Word 2007

By Brandy Madison  |  Published 8/1/2008

The Microsoft Word 2007 program is much more efficient and even easier to use than previous versions. Once you know how to use it, that is. Transitioning from an earlier version of Microsoft Word to the 2007 version can be confusing and frustrating. The entire layout of the toolbars has changed, which actually will make things easier once this format becomes familiar. Until then though, the improvements can feel like nothing but a headache, making you long for your trusty older version of Word. This article will address how to change page layout, margins, and line spacing while using the Microsoft Word 2007 program.

Whereas previous versions of Microsoft Word contained all available functions within the toolbar and drop down menus, Microsoft Word 2007 has changed its format so that all available functions are now available from separate toolbars. These separate toolbars are accessible by clicking on the coordinating tab along the top of the screen. It sounds simple but even seasoned users of Microsoft Word can be thrown off by this change.

Changing the page layout of a document is quite straight forward, as there is a specific tab titled Page Layout which will, when clicked, display all of your Page Layout tools in the Page Layout toolbar. When you click on the Page Layout tab, you will see that the Page Layout toolbar is divided into five sections. In the second section, titled Page Setup, you will see the Orientation tool. When you click on the Orientation tool icon, a drop down menu will appear, giving you the option of either Portrait or Landscape page layouts. Simply click on the one you want.

To change your margins, simply locate the Margins tool icon located directly to the left of the Orientation tool icon. The really great thing about changing margins within the Microsoft Word 2007 program, is that when you click on the tool, you are actually given several set options to choose from. You don't have to type in measurements if you don't want to. Instead, you can simply choose between a wide, narrow, normal, moderate, mirrored, or default margin setting. Of course, you can still opt for the custom tool if you desire, in order to set your own margin measurements.

Customizing your spacing settings is quite simple as well. Within the same Page Layout toolbar, locate the fourth section of tools, which is titled Paragraph. You will find the spacing tool, allowing you to choose your spacing settings for the line spacing between your lines of text.
