Public speaking success unfortunately doesn't just happen by itself. Practicing your speech in advance of the big day isn't optional - it's essential!

We all sound very different inside our heads than we do to others.

That weird sound on the tape recorder that doesn't sound like your voice?

Well, actually that's how it sounds to everyone else when it's not filtered through the internal acoustics of our heads. You need to gain an understanding of how your presentation will sound to others.

For example, often our nerves make us speed up our speech - but presenters often don't realise by just how much because they're brains are also running a bit fast. Listening to yourself can help you to gauge what speed you talk so that you can slow it down to a more manageable pace for your audience. Focus too on where you are placing emphasis on certain words, where you can pause for dramatic effect,

There are some things you can do to help your practice no end. So what are these ways?

Good advice. I committed the same mistake of speaking with speed in my initial guest lectures long back.

Public Speaking could be mastered only through practice, more you practice best you become. While practice you learn new techniques.

Practice makes perfect. Have to be brave after about one or two times doing public speech....the crowd/audience fright disappears.I had my share of this and I will confess it was not easy at first...to add humour....I never even say the things I had on paper...it was all out of my head. Now it is different and easy...just be precise.

Most Experts agree that ideal rate of speech is between One Hundered Sixty and One Hundered Eighty Words per minute. At that rate, people who are listening to you will be able to hear and understand what you are saying.

Thus besides recording and practicing infront of mirror (which are really useful), you should ensure that you are not speaking too fast or too slow. Also, do smile, if your speech permits, as it not only helps in lowering down your anxiety but also since its contagious, it goes to your audience also :-) Above all, you should feel completely comfortable and highly confident. Once you get an expertize on this, you should practice Intonation (modulation of Voice) as well in you speech.

One cannot memorize long talks which one needs to deliver in a meeting or during public speaking. So to make your public speaking easy use bits. Bits can hold that key words that can trigger you mind and which let the information flows from one to the next so you can deliver the information without actually memorizing the long talks.

I have heard from few that if you practice in front of mirror, you could actually remember what you going to say later on. This one didn't work for me ( i forgot what I remembered)

We can always do something to gain "Attention". Possibility that what we think is interesting and speak, does not sound interesting to the public.. reasons can be that the speaker's voice is low, voice has no modulation, noise... etc.. We can regain public attention by increasing the voice, moving around a bit in the given space, use story (not long), use one liners, write on a board if available, show some visuals if possible..

Makes sense????
