Now that the Union Cabinet has approved the new symbol for the Indian Rupee designed by Indian Institute of Technology postgraduate D Udaya Kumar, the question in everyone's mind is how and when do we get to type the new symbol?

New Rupee Symbol

This isn't going to happen overnight. It might take up to a year for the new Rupee symbol to be used throughout India and about two years for international acceptance. For widespread usage, the new symbol has to be accepted by the Unicode Consortium's Unicode Technical Committee that is responsible for the development and maintenance of the Unicode Standard, including the Unicode Character Database.

India is a member of the Unicode Consortium and getting an approval for the new symbol shouldn't be too difficult. In fact the new symbol had been designed keeping in mind the ease with which it can be incorporated into the existing software systems. The Unicode Technical Committee meets on a quarterly basis and the next meeting is scheduled for October.

Encoding in the Unicode Standard will also ensure encoding in the International standard ISO/IEC 10646 as both the organizations work closely with each other. The symbol will also be included in the Indian Standards, viz. 13194:1991 – Indian Script Code for Information Interchange (ISCII), through an amendment to the existing list by the Bureau of Indian Standards. The ISCII specifies various codes for Indian languages for processing on computers along with the key-board lay outs.

While the Government of India can mandate hardware manufacturers to include the symbol in keyboards, it can also be accessed through assigned keyboard combination or via the operating system's Character Map, post approval from the Unicode Consortium. Software manufacturers can include the symbol in their new updates. Soon typographers will release fonts that include the symbol. But these fonts might not be universally supported. Moreover, you can build your own font for the new Rupee symbol using free online font-creation tools. So users, till the time it is formally started being used, how to use this symbol in our daily business?

Yes Kiran it will not be possible to type the symbol as of now but after some time it will be possible. I think it is a good idea we will be the fifth nation to have a symbol in our curency.

RBI, clearly, said that it approves the symbol & subsequently, will be sent to ministry for approval. Also, indicated that, it will not be used in the currency as USD & EURO are being used. Moreover, said ,fast effort will be taken to introduce it in the computer usage such as keyboard short cuts & symbols accepted by Unicode.

If you want to use it. Still, you can use in documents just by using paint brush or word drawing tools. Cut and paste function can do it. To use short cut, it needs to be introduced in the unicode dictionary through symbol.

Well, I feel very excited about the symbol. In fact, me and my wife practiced it out on a piece of paper. For people, who know, how to write Hindi, its easy to write 'ra' and then an upper-cut '-' dash. For people familiar with written english, it should be a numeric '2' with elongated downward tail followed by a top-cut '-' and an upper-cut '-'. Practice it guys, before we have it on computer, it will be required on bank cheque and bills, no?

Thanks Mr Kiran, i think it will take some time to get used to the new symbol, and as Ms Priya said till then INR or Rs will be used. Software will surely be developed to help overcome this problem.

As the ministry said and detailed explanation given by Kiran for the implementation of typing the Rupee emblem might take some time to get in to practical. The greatest thing is the identity created for Indian rupees. Let all of us be proud of it.
