India Gets Close to Saudi Arabia

At a time when the Saudis are, with an eye on Iran, wooing India like never before, the traditionally warm relations between Pakistan and Saudi Arabia are going through a rough patch.

On June 6, Saudi Arabia agreed to double its crude oil exports to India, meaning Indian crude imports from the kingdom would amount to more than 800,000 barrels per day. This is the first big step towards a strategic energy partnership between New Delhi and Riyadh, something that the two sides have been working on since the beginning of last year.

This strategic energy partnership could culminate in a 30-year oil supply contract that Saudi Arabia is expected to sign with India. It would also mark a further step along the path of improved ties since India-Saudi Arabia relations were transformed following the 2006 state visit to India by King Abdullah Bin Abdul Aziz Al-Saud.

Post-Osama bin Laden, Pakistan’s credibility with the United States has touched rock bottom. But the country’s ties with Saudi Arabia – a sworn enemy of bin Laden – have arguably been just as damaged. The fact that bin Laden was found deep inside Pakistani territory won’t have amused the Saudi royal family, which is of course fully aware that one of the late al-Qaeda leader’s goals was the overthrow of the monarchy.

Days after bin Laden’s killing by US Special Forces in Abbottabad, the government of Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari dispatched Interior Minister Rehman Malik to Riyadh. Malik reportedly delivered a letter on behalf of Zardari to King Abdullah. He also gave an exhaustive briefing to top Saudi diplomatic, military and intelligence officials, including Saudi intelligence chief Prince Muqrin and Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Saud al Faisal on the bin Laden episode, telling them that Pakistani military and intelligence officials were completely unaware of bin Laden’s presence in the country. Malik told them that the government had ordered an inquiry into the Abbottabad episode and would share the results with Riyadh.

However, Saudi-Pakistan relations continue to be tense. It’s not just because the Saudis no longer trust the Pakistanis over their promises in the war against terror, but also because Saudi interests are increasingly under attack in Pakistan since bin Laden’s death: following a grenade attack at the Saudi Consulate in Karachi, a Saudi diplomat was shot dead in Karachi.

It is good for India, if Saudi prefers us rather than Pakistan.

Vinoy thanks for referral. Saudi is getting closer to India on the insistence of USA. It is actually good and win win situation for both.

Pakistan will be bypassed by many countries for the reason known to all of us with the exception of China.

And we got to fully utilize this opportunity. We cannot be ruled by our emotions in international politics but keep a shrewd watch on our opportunities. We cannot behave in a knee-jerk mode like we do in National or state polity. That is why I feel the international diplomacy should be left to the experts.

Not surprised. Talking to one of the Directors of Aramco, a Saudi Petroleum company, he pointed out that India will be the sourcing axis in future. Reasons - India's got manpower and expertise. Besides there is no danger to free trade here as there are no political turmoils. It is a vibrant democracy. More countries will follow suit.

the bilateral relations between the two nations 'will continue to blossom' with high-level exchange of visits in near future but there is fear too that they are supporting terrorism, thanks for referral.

With all due respects to you Mr. Murthy, I cannot agree with you onthis topiic. KSA will never prefer us to Pakisthan. It is for its strategic needs, whatsoever it may be , it is warming up to India. And India should fully utilize it.

But always be wary of KSA under this ruling dispensation.

These are best left to the diplomats for we have no access to the intricacies of diplomacy.

I read differently this piece of information.Almost all Afro-Arab world is under turmoil. India may help KSA to understand the simmering discontents among its people. No one can say,it is Egypt today and next the KSA. After all India is managing heterogeneous society so brilliantly.
Thanks,Priyanka for referral.

Thanks for your refferal Mr Rajiv Sharma. It is indeed a great news that we are going to get such huge amount of oil from Saudi Arebia. But as Mr Rohit Thakur said it is always doubtfull that SA oppose terrorist activity. In most of the cases terrorist group get their funds from reach arebian countries.

We can not but to accept this ties. Analysis says that, in the future it's only the Middle-east has the Oil reserve for the World supply. Many of the oil producers such as Russia, Central & North America, Europe, Africa will get depleted by sooner or later by 2020. Means that, these Oil reserve can not be relied on for consumption by India & US. Energy needs of India is on the rise for ever as ,still, there is no alternative energy replace Oil. To meet this requirement & as India find KSA will continue to hold the reserve as expected, India is moving forward to these kind of ties.

Undoubtedly, the dependence of World on the Middle-East market for Oil, will make them superior & try to control it by spending money on Terrorism etc.

As the coloumn suggests, there is an indirect threat from other countries like PAK, it is wise for them to secure it through India. Or else, PAK may misuse these oil-rich countries to their tune.

Theres actually more to it than what you see. First of all this solidification of ties with Saudi Arabia is long time coming. I am thankful that we have woken up at least today. Countries like China and the Phillipines have much stronger ties both in trade as well as in tourism and other areas. Do you know a small country like Indonesia has a higher haj quota than india ? What is the reason ? It is not the fact that indonesia is a predominant muslim community - it is more to do with our foreign ministry officials sleeping on their post.

Even the ambassador to Saudi who was posted last year has hardly done any work other than releasing his own book. One has to just see the activity that countries like china and phillipines to in the trade sphere to beleive it. Our embassies abroad are one of the most dormant in the world. Here the babu's come for a foreign posting and enjoy their stay rather than work for the country. It the same everywhere. China dominates the trade in Saudi being a christian country whereas india with a sizeable population is unable to do so. There are many govt. contracts in the infrastructure field going abegging. It is the embassy that has to be proactive and pass on such info to indian companies and urge them to pitch in large numbers.

Also the fact that pakistan is a terrorist ridden state coupled with their financial woes and the US pressure to look east toward india has done the trick. In Saudi Arabia, anything that the US says works. Dont even think that our babudom has started working. No ! despite the fact that saudi's in general respect indians a lot for our sincerety and hardworking abilities.

How do i know ? i have spent a good 3 yrs in Saudi and was tuned to the ground realities.

I agree to what Mr. Rohit Thakur has said.. The news is good but the bad part is somewhere between the lines. All we do is to hope that only good part comes true.. Thanks for a great update sir..

For fulfilling India's requirement of Crude oil is good for us, but on the issue of Terrorism that Saudi opposes such acts, I doubted that!! If they really support anti terrorism act then why KSA and most of the Middle east countries are transferring large sum of amount to PAK illegally Also how a terrorist like Dawood was hiding there for long long time. Really Mr. Sharma...on a positive side it is really good that we are getting such a huge supply from the nearest source but on other issues like terrorism, all Arab countries are assisting PAK financially. I read an article recently on WIKIPEDIA stating that Washington D.C has got a report on such undeclared transactions. Anyways!!thanks for the wonderful update!
