Internal Recruitment

Recruitment is an ongoing activity in HR department. Problem arises when operation says we have one open position and post an IJP. All eligible employees applies to the IJP and appear for the interview and a week later result comes that somebody from outside have been hired for the position.

Same thing happened recently in my new organization. Ops posted an IJP to fill the position but later another person was hired from outside. Employees raised a question to HR and Head of Operations WHY?

Well, the answer was that none of the internal employees fits the role which is why they had to hire somebody from outside which led to few resignations…..

I don’t understand why we can’t promote people internally for the role when we have the talent pool available. Why is that we believe people outside have better knowledge and would be able to perform better?

There is a very famous saying “KNOWN DEVILS ARE BETTER THAN UNKNOWN ANGLES”. Let’s have trust in our people and promote Internal Recruitment.

Outside recruitment provides the organisation with a broader skill pool and wider experience than could be the case with internal recruitment. The organisation might not find the skills that are required in the current pool of employees. So they go for outside... Another reason would be if a company does its recruitment internally, It most probably faces the possibility of having another empty position to fill. Later on the organization have to advertise outside for it. So they might feel its better to recruit someone from outside.

If any organisation wants to use the available human resources for future growth, steps should be taken to increase the skill set of its employees. I think it would be easy for the 'Known Devils' to train & guide other 'Known Devils'. Real value addition was done in the human resources in some recession hit firms, this way.
I agree with the old adage sir! but recruitment from outside lets in the flow of fresh ideas and new working styles rather than following the routine way of work..

Interesting that the old adage never dies!! But with human minds it gets more and more unpredictable. Though internal promotions are encouraged in every organisation, it is always beneficial to scout for the talent pool available for the same position outside. There are several hazards that can take place when on the internal promotion programme;
1. The higher desig offers the candidate to put his cv in the market for assessment and then he may probably get a better offer from competitors.
2. The external talent might be really good in their skill set for the position and for all practical purposes be available for lesser 'costs'.
3. Either ways we lose a position in the junior level and still need to fill it with external talent. That is sheer waste of time and costs too.

Good article friend........ one of the reasons could be the internal resource may not fit the bill (as you mentioned in your passage)........there are couple of things to be noticed ....... to fill the position asap irrespective of the resource internal or external.......coming to the other issue, the internal employees have to be trained or else they should have the skill that we/you looking out...... but at the end of the day the position has to be filled....... :)

Nice topic Gargi :)) I feel we are going through tough times. Recession is on its way .. Euro crisis, political instability in most of the countries will lead to great depression again. However, Lay-Offs i dont think so is happening at this point in...
What a topic to debate on... I guess it is not Boss who change his/her behaviour infact it is subordinate who changes because in the end it is BOSS who has to rate you on your projects success and failure.
I agree with Kirti... If situation demands you to join a new company and your new employer is ready to hire you without a Service Certificate (releaving letter) I dont see any problem.. Ask your current employer if they give acceptance of resignation...
