We all know that internet has power to change the world. Egypt is the living example. But do we know our internet rights?

The Indian blogosphere is quite active and eloquent, complementing the rise in internet use by different interest groups and civil society actors. Bloggers are rarely forced by the government or private individuals to take down their writings, but there have been a few instances in which this has occurred.

Lakshmana Kailash K was jailed for 50 days for allegedly defaming an Indian historical figure online. It later emerged that another person had posted the material, and Kailash was arrested based on the (basis of a) wrong IP address.

In the past, instances of the central government seeking to control communication technologies were relatively rare. However, following the November 2008 terrorist attacks in Mumbai and with an expanding Maoist insurgency, the need, desire, and ability of the Indian government to control the communications sector have grown," states the report. "Pressure has also increased on private intermediaries to remove certain information. Though most requests have targeted comments that might incite communal violence, some observers have raised concerns of certain removals being unnecessary.

On the overall state of the internet, the report says that even in democratic countries like Brazil, India, Indonesia, South Korea, Turkey, and the UK, internet freedom is increasingly undermined by legal harassment, opaque censorship procedures, or expanding surveillance.

Still we believe we have freedom to say anything, do anything and post anything..

The definition of freedom is changed as political base. Our all the politician are free to do any thing but we are not.Democracy is only name of show case to decor law breakers, non social and criminals.Common man have not any use of democracy and rights of speaks and opinions but have right to information which is given by any curruppted and guilty officer.

Dear Ms Swetha,
Thanks for your information. A recent survey told that 70 % netizens are using internet for chatting for sex and romance. 10 % for business transations and negotiations. Three per cent are the Govt. office transactions. The remaining are the people who really using internet - for knowledge sharing and education elements. If we increase the people in the later group, then we, the Nation, can be benefitted socially and economically.

Freedom of Speech or Expression would become effective only when you have receptive audience. Wrongful confinement is a matter of great concern. If you are punishing a wrong person purely based on the IP address shows immaturity. Our cyber laws are evolving, and we need to a learn a lot before it is effectively used! "Trial and Error" methods will not work! Our police force is not equipped with the right people and they have to go by what they are told and most of the times they tend to make mistakes on such technical errors.
