Neither attrition nor stress are limited to Infosys. As a corp. holistic stress management trainer, I have addressed hundreds of young techies in various ITES companies. While it is true that work in these companies is demanding, the ultimate stress level depends on how well one can cope with it. 90% of our stress comes not from what happens to us - deadlines,work pressures etc. - but from how we take it. When work pressures and lifestyle errors combine, it's a heady cocktail and this is what is killing people, slowly but surely. Quitting a job is not the solution, quitting unbalanced lifestyle (no exercise, wrong eating, inadequate sleep/rest, etc.)and egoistic attitudes, is the solution.

All said and done, we need to introspect, "Do we, at all, require this lifestyle to convert "rich" into "richer"? What they are throwing to you, in return, is some pieces of bones! Who is talking about "occupational hazards"? Because of uneventful lifestyle, we have allowed so many health insurance companies and the super-speciality hospitals to prosper! My worry is, in future none of our techies would get "grand" (grand father or grand mother) status! We are knowingly reducing our "life expectancy"! Actuarial calculations of insurance companies are also changing. They have increased premium for age groups beyond a point! We won't be surprised, the Government would bring the people in the age group of "50" as senior citizens! Where are we tredging? This is not a pessimistic view? Daily work outs, discipline, change in mindset all these things are okay, but why can't we live the way Germans live?

Dear Mr Uttam : There is some truth in what you say, my friend, but there is some truth in what Mr Murthy says too. We are all in selfishly motivated, imperfect relationships. Do you think the employees of Infosys care for their company really selflessly ? If they did not receive a compensation and treatment better than which they could not get elsewhere, would they stay any longer ? Is the average employees' love for the company any more evolved than the company's love for the average employee ?

Employers and employees need to marry their interests. We all need to care for ourselves as well as those we live and work with. Gradually our consciousness evolves and is then no more hidebound ; then and not before then, our love becomes unconditional and we become Self-realized. Before that, it's all a journey - within and without.

When you realise that in the name of cost cutting, your employer is getting the work of two persons from one individual, that is when you realise that for the Board of Directors of your employer organization, "anything goes" when it comes to pleasing Wall Street.

That is when NR Narayana Murthy's words "Our assets walk out of the door each evening. We have to make sure that they come back the next morning.” ring hollow!

Thanks Jyoti for referral. I think the best way to kepp out of stress is dont think about something which you cant solve. With the thinking the roots are so big that one starts geting stress. So avoid it. the other factors are have already being mentioned by our learned friends. Drink a lot of green tea without milk to make your body anti oxidant.

Why and what did the outsourcer do? Along with the job they also outsourced the health hazards. And the people are feeling the outcomes now.

As fire fighting do YOGA and physical exercises may not work in the long run.

As this world is all about fooling each other and make money nothing as a concrete solution can be cemented out.

The only thing I would suggest is prevention is the best cure.
More than all these different ideas of bring down the stress levels it is better to identify where the source of stress is from and how it can be minimized. If someone can do this of every employee in the company then it may be better.

Thank you Mr. Raju for clearing my doubt.
Mr. Hans I have gone through your site . I have not read the book but yes I would love to. Thanks for the Pdf format but I would prefer to purchase it.

Dear Vishwanath,
I too had taken loan and had to work in completely different field but I was not at all productive. I left that job and pursued what I wanted and repaid my loan in half the duration. It is all about understanding what you want to do and making a strategy to do it successfully. As I already said that we don't let our mind create space for our thoughts and this results into pressure and stress.

Vishwanath : So then, what is the problem ? They have loans and they are willing to do anything, so let them learn, let them work and be grateful that they found a job at Infosys or wherever. The trouble is, first we have stress of desire, then we are not contented and grateful, so we have a new stress. No matter how many desires God fulfills, man will always crib. Hard work, I believe, is not the main source of stress ; not loving what we do and not being grateful for what we have, is. You understand me, dear ? Tell yr friends, we must work hard, exercise everyday, cultivate good habits and most importantly, have an attitude of gratitude !

Thanks Ms. Jyoti and Dr. Hans Dolakia for your comments. To answer Ms. Jyoti's point, German people are very strict in adhering to "work hours" and "week ends"! They have very strict work culture and would not even answer your call after office hours or on week ends!

Your welcome Sir.

I am not an Infy insider and so do not know much about it. Perhaps you can get in through reference only. But it is not the only company and would like to tell you that not a great place to be in.. As we say all that glitters is not the gold.. Anyways the tips shared are useful and important for anyone and everyone.

The main problem is that we fail to create a space in our mind for spreading our thoughts.

Thank you, Jyoti. I had written to Infosys HR people at various levels ; they may have changed now. My methodology is that I first do programs in groups, and when people open up, I can be their regular life coach online or just give some post-training support by mails etc. Thank you, Mr Raju.

Let me give a few tips to raise coping skills or SHQ (Stress Handling Quotient) :

1. Exercise everyday, preferably include yogasana-pranayama-meditation ;
2. Do mindful eating - Eat seasonal greens/fruits/nuts/sprouts etc.,& avoid junk food ;
Drink enough water - start your day with about 2 glasses of water the first thing in the morning, but unless you wish to gain weight, drink not water with meals.
3. Manage your time. Prioritize,identify your 'time robbers', avoid procrastination ;
4. When you make a mistake, apologize quickly. When others do so, forgive. This will reduce emotional stress.
5. Check your posture - sit upright. Take breaks and do deep abdominal breathing.
6. Pray regularly ;
7. Get adequate sleep and rest,etc.

Exactly Mr. Raju we always fail to understand things because the society is more or less number oriented.. We need to score good marks and we mug up things for that.. Later when it comes to application of the concept we are clueless.. Then there are few who understand the concept but do not mug it up and end up scoring less marks. These candidates have lesser choices and either end up being entrepreneurs or waste their lives.

You can add one more reason to this. It is due to our educational system. Our educational system teaches us 'by heart' method whereas the jobs require 'by analysis' method. Majority of the people are good at mugging up and reproducing but fail miserably when we need to think and create.

Well Sir I do not have clear idea about how are you trying to contact Infosys but let me tell you that they have a life coach at Mysore campus and have one on one services for the same.
http://www.facebook.com/chaya.srivatsa is the link to the life coach of Infosys Mysore DC.

Let me also clarify that I have no soft corner for Infosys. In fact, I have been writing to them for years offering holistic wellness training programs that thousands of people in India and abroad have confirmed as being very helpful/useful (ref www.hansyoga.com/what.htm to witness feedback), but Infosys haven't cared to respond probably because they think they are a big,reputed company where trainers make a beeline. They don't take time to evaluate. It's sad. It's hard to say whether companies are more heartless towards employees, or employees towards themselves. They seem to be competing in this, and sure enough, it is people who are suffering in both situations. Companies should realize that with sick and stressed people, they cannot retain their competitive edge. Corporates lose hundreds of billions of dollars globally
due to employee sickness/medical leave/presenteeism/absenteeism/health insurance etc., while a miniscule fraction of this amount spent on wellness training, can save it all - but who cares ?
  Commented by  Hans Dholakia, Founder-President, www.hansyoga.com    | 04 06 2011 09:37:42 +0000
Yes, Jyoti, you have a point. I agree that companies too must be more people-centric and workplaces should be more humanized. My personal view is that workplace realities may get even harsher due to rising competition / lengthening work-hours, and since it is not easy to change the macro reality, why don't at least people start loving themselves and taking good care ?

What can Infosys, or for that matter, any company do for people who don't take time to exercise, who eat too much junk food, don't take adequate sleep and rest, don't pray etc. ? Such people no matter where they work, even if they worked for themselves (becoming self-employed), they will have stress-induced problems. I am sorry to find most people don't care for their health. So while companies need to be more mindful about human capital by providing wellness training / gyms and yoga space etc., people must get more self-aware. The former is desirable, the latter is unavoidably crucial and the bottomline.

Yes Sir its true but still I woould like to say taht putting so much of pressure at a go makes it difficult to cope.Company also should understand this.
