With just two months left for the sporting extravaganza called the Commonwealth Games to begin in New Delhi, the air has been thick with allegations of corruption at all levels of functioning of the Suresh Kalmadi-led Organising Committee. As many of the ‘state-of-the-art’ stadia built for the Games leak like sieves during this monsoon season, leaks of a different kind the media have been reporting suggest that it has been an open-sesame to loot for the organisers of the Games. The Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports wants Kalmadi’s right hand man and deputy director-general Sanjay Mohindroo, who had been caught with a `25-lakh diamond-studded ring deep in his pocket while flying back from London, summarily sacked.

It is a measure of the cloak and dagger manner in which Kalmadi, nicknamed ‘Calamity’, has been controlling affairs that the ministry did not even know that Mohindroo had quit ‘two-three months ago’. While it is not known why Mohindroo resigned and why the resignation was kept under wraps, the discomforting fact is that he had taken an advance of `94.15 lakh in foreign currency for his team’s visit to London. It now transpires that the e-mail Kalmadi showed to prove that the dubious British firm ‘AM Car and Van’ was engaged for the Queen’s Baton Relay at the suggestion of the Indian High Commission in London was fraudulent. Obviously, there was a kickback when the company was given an advance of `1.81 crore in pound sterling.

The Comptroller and Auditor General of India has also detailed some other fraudulent practices indulged in by the Organising Committee like inflating the revenue the Games could rake in. Even as newly-built pavements cave in, buildings remain nowhere near completion and the beautification work goes awry comes the report that `740 crore earmarked for Scheduled Caste/Tribe welfare has been used for Games-related infrastructure work. Worse, experts who have tested some of the new stadia are unanimous that the workmanship employed is poor and they would not last long. Is it any wonder that many sporting stars, including our own, are opting out of the Games? All this has dented India’s image and, yet, the UPA government is not ready to strike at Kalmadi on the specious plea that he is there in his capacity as Indian Olympic Association president. What it does not recognise is that the money he and company have been looting is not that of the IOA but of the people of India.

Why!! Test cricket is the best form of cricket and that tests the real power of a player. We should not get lost in glamor and forget the roots should we?? |
BJP too is forcing him to resign but he is seeking legal options to stay in. No one wants him, everyone knows how corrupt he is still he is not willing to leave! what should this attitude be called? Do you think he will resign at will ? |
Yes it can be called inside information from a blog. We cannot the understand the real feeling without facing a similar situation. |
ALL CORRUPTION CHARGES ETC.SAID & DONE... THE SHOW MUST GO ON !! Why should Sportsmen suffer because of all this ? In fact this should work as an Eye Opener for the Government & People by large. Lets hope positive face saving measures are taken & AAL IS WELL, at the end of this drama.
