This is an ET article which I was going through people, the most common phrase Jugaad what we use in our day to day context to make things happen, has been beautifully written in this article. Read on to know more....an interesting piece rather...

People ask me, what exactly is jugaad? Global management experts attribute India's rapid economic growth to jugaad. In a recent survey by the Legatum Institute, 81% of Indian businessmen said jugaad was the key reason for their success.

Many years ago, innovative Punjabis mounted a diesel irrigation pump on a steel frame with wheels, creating a vehicle they called jugaad. It was ultra-cheap but did not conform to vehicular regulations. Over time, jugaad came to mean grassroots innovation to overcome any constraint.

In the West, innovation is done by scientists using expensive equipment. In India, it's done by every housewife, farmer, transporter, trader and industrialist. It does not require high-spending R&D: it simply needs creativity and imagination. Anil Ambani once said Reliance succeeded through innovation, not invention.

http://projectsjugaad.com/wpimages/what-is-jugaad.jpg

One avatar of jugaad is what management gurus call "frugal engineering", exemplified in the Tata Nano, the cheapest car in the world. India's telecom companies provide calls at Re 1 a minute, the cheapest in the world. Narayana Hrudayalaya and Shankara Nethralaya provide the cheapest heart and eye treatment in the world. Indian reverse-engineering of patented drugs is also frugal engineering.

Some management experts warn that jugaad uses any means, legal or illegal, to get a job done. They say bribery and manipulation must not be confused with genuine creativity.

I disagree. The creativity in unethical activity is, with rare exceptions, not fundamentally different from the creativity that yields frugal engineering. The incentives and rewards of the political-economic system determine whether creativity is used mainly for unethical profit or heroic productivity.

The hawala market, for instance, is used by drug lords for money laundering. But it is also an example of jugaad, enabling poor migrants to remit money across countries, faster and more cheaply than any formal bank system. Hawala was legal for centuries before modern governments declared it illegal.

Dhirubhai Ambani was the master of jugaad. The licence-permit raj made it impossible for him to progress legally, so he exploited the corruption and cynicism of the system.

He exported junk to get profitable import entitlements. He created industrial capacities vastly in excess of licensed capacity. He imported huge textile machines as "spare parts". He engineered highly profitable changes in rules for polyester imports and telecom licences. The jugaad he used to overcome hurdles was not distinguishable from crony capitalism.

Yet when the licence-permit raj gave way to a more open and deregulated economy, Dhirubhai used the same jugaad to scale dizzying heights of productivity and become world class. His giant refinery complex in Jamnagar had the highest refining margins in the world, beating the Singapore refineries. He converted to reality his vision of making telephone calls cheaper than a postcard.

Dhirubhai showed that manipulation and world class productivity are two sides of the same coin called jugaad. If governments create business constraints through controls and high taxes, jugaad will be used to overcome those hurdles. But if deregulation abolishes these hurdles, the main business constraints become lack of quality and affordability, so jugaad shifts to improving productivity, quality and affordability. That ultimately makes you world class.

So people, what are your views on the Great Indian Jugaad?

Ms Disha u r very correct and all the information given by was also very correct and interesting... but really I'll tell you one practical example of this previously i was working with a heavy engineering company we were manufacturing very difficult parts for big MNC's across the world.. once 5 jobs were returned back to us from Germany as the OD was found 10micron oversize, as the OD was around 2500mm the job cannot be trued again on the machine and hence the jobs were rejected .... But WE Indian (Proud to be) me and my collegues and our senior we changed the whole scenario in a single night shift ..what we did was JUGAAD (cant tell here what we did) but seriously telling you all the jobs were again inspected and found OK... till now those german engineers are sending us mail and asking us what we did .... I'm really proud to be an Indian as we wake up where other's had left the game .. hats off to JUGAAD

Perfectly suited to Indian condition. Our road side mechanics are more pragmatic and practical than the those who have obtained Engineering degrees from premier institutions. Whatever said and done, we are tuned to quick-fix solution, which our Indians are capable of managing than any one in the world!

Very good initiative Disha.
I personally feel that 'Jugaad' is to take risk of remote problem (which may be more important in long term overall ), just to solve the bottlenecked (and utmost important for the present time) problem.

hi disha
this article was apt not only cos it mentioned 'jugaad' the Indian version of frugal engineering (as the author rightly put), but also the fact that i was published on the day of our independence. jugaad may be viewed in many many ways... for some its good for some its bad, for some its unethical for others its easier way to do their work. what ever the views may be, it does help in getting things done. the reason why we are so good in jugaad is (what i think) that we do not have ample resources for doing things, and if there are resources they are not easily accessible. well what ever the reason is, we use in every walk of our life...and the fact that people are recognising it globally proves that they want to be what we are... proud to be a part of it :)
but beware, as the old saying goes, too much of anything is bad...

** Jugaad ** Is not any tools or predefine technique which is used to every people when you want to use it. The Jugaad is the common people`s think to be generated when we have no technique and tools are available to solved that time problems. then that time we can use a common thinks without using any resources to resolve that time problems. that is called "Indian JuGaAd" !! :)

It is good but many a times it boomerangs. Jugaad can not be a tool to success all the time and so I don't think it is our most precious resource.

Hey Disha,
I would like to thanks you for giving such a beautiful article to all users.
"JUGAAD", we use this term in our daily life. Jugaad is not invented, it is already in blood of all Indians.
I want to share one of my experience, 2 yrs back me and my elder brother were driving from dehradun to delhi its around 250 kms, all of a sudden there was a noise and I lost balance on car somehow I manage and park my car at the side. we checked and found that the pulley (Part of engine) has broken due to which power steering, power break stop working. We start the car and drive slowly and reach to mechanic but that was a town and its hard to find genuine parts of Honda City.

My brother asked what is the solution? he said sir it would take a day because we are not having the part we need to import it from delhi.

Then I said "koi jugaad kar de yaar", He thinks for 2 min and checked engine again and conclude "sirji jugaad to ho jayega aur gadi delhi pohoch jayegi, itni guarantee deta hu". We both were surprised and asked what will you do.
He said I will change the place of some parts of your engine but due to this your A.C wont work.
We agreed because my brother was having a meeting in delhi. it took around an hour and handover the car to us. we paid him just Rs.300, and came to delhi.
Next day we complaint to handa service centre and they were surprised after examining the engine and asked us "What you did with engine?", according to honda engineers car was not able to move but we drove the car around 180 kms after JUGAAD.
We replied "ye JUGAAD hai!!!"

The word 'JUGAAD'(jugaar) is used mainly for some required but unavailable gadgets to repair/maintenance on urgent basis, e.g. to open one 22mm nut, the available Box spanner is 25mm only, then placing some object in the rest 3mm gap to open nut is "JAGAAD".

Jugaad is a local term and is not a MBA term (Its a POINT). It generates less tension when told to do. If someone tells you to find a 'solution', your approach becomes somewhat scientific. But when some tells you to do a Juggad the whole approach is way to different :)

Punjab business have reached heights using the term JUGGAD. Its like less tension. It brings out the creative BEAST (that right) in you. It make you witty and wise (YUP). It makes a DEVIL with an ANGEL circle over you head (yeh yeh).

So guys no guesses JATT is from Punjab and we are JUGGADEE (A new term to CHEW).

Jugaad at best is a stop gap arrangement and if treated as such it may be a positive tool. thatt can as well provide feed for innovations with provided strengths of best practices and technology. Continuing to use Jugaad without improvements can at best bring stagnation and decay.
Thanks Disha

Yes Disha!
We some time overcome our problems with some solutions and we say "Kya karna yehi accha Jugaad hai." And we most of the common people thinks that Jugaad is like essential solution or necessity. For intelligent person or for scientists Necessity is the Mother of Innovation. So It is proud to say that "Our Indians has inborn cability of scientist thinkings"!. only we have to explore it and appreciate the JUGADS of common peoples.

Hi, Thanks for the nice message Disha.

We use these innovations in our day to day lives right from fixing a cycle, bike to kitchen items, etc. Even kids take to this kind of Jugaad especially in their games related affair. Look at how some of our street cricket is being played. The Dabba-wallas of Mumbai, etc., are another example of how we "jugaaded" in the past to provide solution to various problems. Great.

Proud to state that we Indians produce great "JUGAAD-EES".

Till it is a combo of frugality and innovation and till it gives you the ability to think beyond standard lines (as in Mr. Santosh's example) Jugaad is a marvellous tool and can be termred as national pride for Indians. I was just reading the book, "Games Indians Play" in which the writer, inspite of criticising a lot (for which the book is written), he appreciated that an european laundry assistant would not accept an apparel not in his rate list while an Indian will immediately work out a rate for it.
But when this Jugad becomes synonym of "by hook or crook" then it is the worst and most shameful tool to possess and does not remain our national pride.
