On the eve of International women's day & Oscar awards ceremony, kathryn bigelow became the first woman to win the Best Director award for the movie "Hurt locker". And she became the first ever woman to receive the best director Oscar in the 82 years of the Academy Awards.
The Hurt Locker movie which is about the gritty Iraq War drama about an Army bomb disposal squad, won best picture and nabbed an Oscar for Kathryn Bigelow, the first woman to win best director. And I guess most of you don't know is that she is the ex-spouse of fellow director nominee James Cameron, whose blockbuster Avatar was tied with Hurt Locker with a field-leading nine nominations but won just three statues. Hurt Locker which was a small movie came up with six.
In past the other woman directors nominated were Lina Wertmueller, for "Seven Beauties" in 1976, Jane Campion for "The Piano" in 1993 and Sofia Coppola for "Lost In Translation" in 2003.
But from last couple of oscars we are seeing an interesting change where more and more small films like Slumdog millionaire & Hurt locker which has only made $21 million till date winning 6 oscars and challenged Avatar which had nearly $2.6 Billion in earnings and had wide appreciation from the audience. But for the jury members it was other way around and once again this time around we saw a small movie like Hurt locker sweeping 6 oscars to its kitty.
