There are more than 60 accredited hospitals in india either by JCI or NABH and if we add hospitals accredited by ISO then the number would be above 1000.

Accredition have never helped indian patients to choose a healthcare service provider as it never clearly indicates what benefits the patient is going to get from such accredited institutions.

There are no clear demarcation for differentiating hospitals with their collective performance as one set up may be for secondary, tertiary or quaternary care.

Patients are either referred to one hospital by general physicians or person in whom they have faith or they choose independently by their past experience.

Few of the indicators I hope may help patient to choose a healthcare set up :

a) Number of patients treated (Including OPD & IPD)

b) Number of regular medical consultants on roll.

c) Types of facilities availaible(diagnostic & therapeutic)

d) Location of the hospital.

e) Regulations & management of the hospital(Govt / Cooperative or Private)

f) Accredition by any reputed agency(JCI/NABH/ISO).

g) Schedule of charges.

Hi Prem ,
Speaking of KPI for hospitals, www.smartKPIs.com may be a good resource for you. It contains a user friendly library of well-documented performance measures. At the moment it lists over 4500 KPI examples, grouped in 73 functional areas, as well as 83 industries and sub-categories.

KPI examples for hospitals are available on this page http://www.smartkpis.com/kpi/industries/healthcare/hospitals/ They include but not limited to:

# Operating time on bypass
# Average length of stay of patients
% Time that hospital beds are occupied

In addition to examples of performance measures, www.smartKPIs.com also contains a catalogue of performance reports that illustrate the use of KPIs in practice.

Examples of such reports for hospitals are available on: http://www.smartkpis.com/kpi_examples_in_practice/industries/healthcare/hospitals/

The website is updated daily with new content, so check it from time to time for additional content.

Please note that while examples of performance measures are useful to inform decisions, each performance measure needs to be selected and customized based on the objectives and priorities of each organisation.

Best regards,

The best managed hospital should cater to all sections of society - not only care for the rich. Arvind Eye hospitals has demonstrated that by providing free/cheap health care can also be profitable by handling large number of patients and charge patients depending on the level of service and facilities provided.

ISO 9001:2000
What makes ISO unique is that it relies on the individual organization to establish, document, implement and maintain a quality management system and continually improve its effectiveness. ISO assists the organization in designing and ensuring its documented processes are effective and support its mission.
