India is well known as a business process outsourcing hub (BPO), now the same is being replicated in Knowledge Process Outsourcing(KPO) industry. KPO industry in India is likely to grow to US $11.2 billion in revenue by 2010-11 and is expected to employ approximately 255,000 professionals. KPO jobs are better paid and as such they are high IQ too.
KPO works can be categorized to two segments:
- Decision Management or Vertical Solutions or Analytics
- MIS Reporting
KPO includes domains, such as Business Research, Intellectual Property & Legal Research, Investment Research, Market Research and Data Mining.
KPO industry also include company’s own divisions for Business Intelligence. These are generally off-shored or near-shored or in-house. These do almost the same thing as the outsourcing companies do and generally have teams like:
- Analysis
- Business Consulting
- Modeling and Scoring
- Data Management
- Reporting
These teams have difference in functionality but the expertise requirement remains the same. It is very hard for one to master one area without the knowledge of other.
While the India has huge potential of being a KPO hub, the problem is with the talent availability. There are few good universities which produces statistics graduates, who are the key professionals in the KPO sector. There is the challenge of high attrition rates due to to excessive job-hopping by young professionals who want to earn quick money within a short span of time.
The recent survey over Indian KPO industry shows that KPO professionals are earning twice as much as they were earning 4 years ago, there is an increased customer base and the presence of clients in other countries as well. This is an indication of huge growth potatial for Indian sector.
Overall future of KPO industry looks good but this can only happen if the mantioned challenges are addressed. Lets see how it goes further. If India becomes a KPO hub in line with BPO then India is going to be clear leader in overall ITes. I wont deny even overcoming United States.

Yes one can do that, just to retain the customer or to remain them loyal towards you...but then it will be more so difficult to change the price as the customers would have adjusted to the lower prices and when there is an increase people wont remain... |
Yes before a 100$ Investment for them in outsourcing they were saving 35-40$ as India was giving them tax exemption, but now Obama is restoring the jobs where he is asking the tax from those companies which are outsourcing...and in US a 1 hr sitting... |
With 3G coming to India in 2009, I think Research and development spending will be on 4G technology, by which video conferencing will be possible due to high bandwidth as much as 100Mbps... |
