MUST READ ---
Lap tops in bed is a 'No No'

Please pass to everyone you know....

A couple lost their 25 year old son, Arun Gopal Ratnam, in a fire at home on June 4th , 2010

The son who had graduated with MBA from the University of Wisconsin-Madison two weeks earlier had come home for a while.
He had lunch with his dad at home and decided to go back to clean up his hostel room.

His father told him to wait, to meet his mother, before he went back for a few days.

Arun decided to take a nap while waiting for his mom to come back home from work.

Sometime later their neighbors called 911 when they saw black smoke coming out of the house.

Unfortunately, 25 years old Arun died in the three year old house. It took several days of investigation to find out the cause of the fire.

It was determined that the fire was caused by the Laptop resting on the bed.

When the lap top was on the bed the cooling fan did not get the air to cool the computer and that is what caused the fire.

He did not even wake up to get out of the bed because he died of breathing in carbon monoxide.

The reason I am writing this to all of you is that I have seen many of us using our lap top while in bed.

Let us all decide and make it a practice not to do that.
The risk is real.

Let us make it a rule not to use the lap top on the bed or put the computer on the bed with blankets and pillows around.

Please educate as many people as you can.

Good information. Fortunately I keep my laptop on a table. It was inconvenient for me using it on the bed or sofa. But your article helped me to realize that 'what I am doing is good'. Thanks a lot.

Nice message - warning of possible dangers.

However, this message is a hoax, according to this article --> http://www.hoax-slayer.com/laptop-fire-warning.shtml

I quote perhaps the most pertinent sentence of the article:
-----------------------------------------------------------
In response to my query about the fire, the Fire Chief at Menomonee Falls Fire Department explained that the "fire is still under investigation, and the cause is yet to be determined".

Still, the message DOES highlight a grave danger of using a laptop placed ON TOP OF SOFT MATERIAL such as fabrics, etc which would block the airflow inside the laptop casing. This causes the LITHIUM-ION BATTERY to get very hot, then becoming unstable, the battery bursts into flames.

IT IS THE LITHIUM-ION BATTERY WHICH IS DANGEROUS.

There are so many equipments and instruments we use not following proper instructions which the manufacturer lays down and similar accidents do take place but still people over look safety norms just because following such instructions are time consuming and also requires certain amount of order.

The customer must know how to use a gadget. There is nothing to be worried much about this. Fire accidents can occur due to computer hardware. One must be careful about these. I suggest, it is always good to know the product one is using or intends to use. Everything has its benefits. I would say a less heat producing processor would do much good in case if one wants to avoid fire accidents. For example AMD processors according to many computer techies produces less heat than the Intel processors. I am not sure if this is entirely true among the range of AMD processors but I found a few good examples. It is important to know the hardware before purchase rather than regret after buying one.

Thank you,
Sree Krishna Dutta.

Thanks. Bed is a place for rest and sleeps. Its bad habit to do office works or playing computer games in bed. We should learn from such case studies.

The most unfortunate part is that most of us think ourselves most competent in every field and do not read the operating manuals whenever purchasing a new product. I have seen people throw away the technical literature or leave it at the shop just after purchase. If only we read carefully the operation manuals and the dos and don'ts such wrong practices and mishaps can be avoided. The manuals clearly state that the air vents must not be blocked during use.

OMG!!!!.......... This is the sole reason why I skipped the idea of purchasing a Laptop, instead I brought a Desktop which is the safest form of personal computing and it takes away idleness and laziness as well. So by now my dear friends use Laptops reasonably and you all must have a desktop for safety security and comfortableness.

thanks for the info
A good insight madam pooja. It is a usual practice to keep the laptop on bed. I am not exception to it. Thank you for this enlightening information. I think this happens only when it is plugged in and kept in working mode. When it is not plugged and not used, there wont be any problem I believe.
