Make Your Blog More Than Just Talk
Web logs, more commonly known as just “blogs,” are now very common. Entrepreneur magazine says there are 114 million sites worldwide with 175,000 new sites daily. These are Websites generated by users where entries are made in the form of a journal which in this case is a daily record of business or other events. These entries are displayed in reverse chronological order meaning the latest events are listed at the top of the list.Blogs generally provide thoughts or news on a particular subject, such as food, politics, or local news. A typical blog combines text, images, and links to other blogs, web pages, and other media related to its topic. The ability for readers to leave comments in an interactive format is an important part of most blogs. A lot of blogs are primarily textual although some focus on photographs (photoblog), sketchblog, videos (vlog), or audio (podcasting). What kinds of blogs are out there? Rick Bruner, President of Executive Summary Consulting, says there are four types of successful blogs:Thought Leadership Blog. The thought leadership blog allows bloggers to distinguish themselves as being a well-informed industry professional. A professional might use this kind of blog to get their name before peers who might use their services or products in some way to profit the blogger.Customer Relations Blog. The customer relations blog engages with customers. This kind of blog makes a lot of sense for entrepreneurs. New products can be quickly introduced as well as helpful tips on how to use existing products. This kind of blog helps to make satisfied customers who will give marvelous referrals for your products and business.Peer Marketing Blog. These marketing blogs are ways for marketers to get the word out about new products. If enough traffic can be generated to one of these blogs, a lot of sales volume can be generated. A serious marketer will do whatever is needed to generate many links to this kind of blog.Media Relations Blog. These kinds of blogs can be used to augment a marketing plan by furnishing press releases. The main effort with such a blog is to create a personal relationship with journalists and the general media. If you have gone to the trouble to create a blog there is every reason you should use it to bring in as much income as possible. Any of these kinds of blog could be used as a base for making money from products, services, affiliate programs, advertising, and any other wealth-generating source your creativity may develop. Your blog is just like any other Website you have and needs to have large volumes of traffic to generate income for you.Now that you have established your blog, you need to do everything you can to drive traffic to it. In The 120 Day Wonder: How to Evangelize a Blog, Guy Kawasaki discusses 10 ways to direct visitors to your blog. Just like with any Website you want as many people as possible to read your messages; if people don’t see what you are saying, why waste the effort? Here’s a condensed discussion of Kawasaki’s 10 ideas:1. Although Web logs began as personal diaries, to have any hope of generating income they, have to be treated as books. With the book mindset you should then market the site as a book as hard as you can using every means available.2. When writing for your blog, imagine a little man sitting on your shoulder who asks of everything you write, “Who cares about this stuff you are writing?” If you can’t answer your little man, write something else.3. Use your e-mail list to promote your blog. On all your regular e-mails include a blog reference in every signature.4. Links to a blog are called a “blogroll.” Links are as important to blogs as they are to other Websites, so if you wish to increase your income you should do whatever is necessary to increase links. Your blog theme will have a built-in blogroll which you can add to by physically going about the Internet collecting links. A better way is to join Blogrolling, a free service which can be upgraded for more services with a fee. Blogrolling can be automatically set to gather blog links to your site. Two other readers are also helpful for finding unknown link sites: NetNewsWire for Mac OS and Endo for Windows. Be sure to use a “ping” wherever it is available; this will insure all your link sites are upgraded with new additions to your blog. Because there are so many millions of blogs, it has become necessary to use specialized blog search engines. The best known is Technorati which tracks almost 113 million blogs. Be sure and click the “Blogger Central” tab on the right end of the top toolbar, then click “Ping” to be sure your blog is constantly updated. I’ve had quite a few links from volunteers who found me using Technorati. Get help from wherever it comes.5. Try to be first with finding articles for your blog. Other bloggers will link to your site as well as to the article. This requires a lot of writing and a lot of reading to find good articles of wide interest.6. Focus your reading on the top 50 blogs you can find; Technorati can help. If you have expertise in any of their areas, write a timely essay instead of just a brief comment. This helps the other blogger with content and who knows how they may help you with publicity, testimonials, and links.7. Try to respond to every comment to your articles. This will cause you to receive many referrals from appreciative commenters. 8. In your articles, ask for help if you need it in some area. Readers will feel important when they respond, and it promotes a sense of community for you and your readers.9. Be bold with your writing. It’s your blog, say what you want. Even if you get bad-mouthed, those bloggers will still link to you.10. Get more exposure for your blog with FeedBurner and distribute your newsletter and blog with FeedBlitz.Just about every one of the Kawasaki suggestions involves writing. An excellent article on how to write for your blog can be found here, Business Communication Headline News. Some of the ideas discussed are:
  • Use a title that gets attention.
  • Write about current issues; no one wants old news.
  • Do not stray from the main theme of your article; focus on one topic.
  • Use keywords effectively in your title and throughout your article. This is important, because the same search engines that find your Websites will find your blog.
  • Post several times each week if you are serious about attracting more readers.
A few examples of well-written blogs designed for monetary results are:Engadget, with over 25,000 links; its basic subject is current electronic devices for consumers and government. Gizmodo, The Gadget Guide has 15,000 links; this site deals with computer-related electronic equipment.Lifehacker, the Productivity and Software Guide deals with computer issues, especially those pertaining to software and has 11,000 links.Ars Technica analyzes all aspects of technology; it has almost 10,000 links.Another well developed blog is that of John Chow, which is designed primarily to make money on the site. He not only uses a lot of daily articles and current news items, but his blog is crammed with advertisements of all kinds from over 100 ad network sites. This is where his money is, and you need to use as many of these as possible. Google will find many more. Some of the better known are: ShoppingAdsKontera ContentlinkClickZ Ad NetworksJohnChow.com uses Wordpress as the blog platform. I use it, too, and recommend it as very easy to use, the platform is free, and they have a partnership with several hosting sites which make installation quick and painless. Mine was installed and running in less than 10 minutes. JohnChow.com has a category of articles entitled “Wordpress” including several articles on technical issues you won’t find in the Wordpress documentation. The other categories have similar helpful ideas about other aspects of blog monetization. Bookmark this site and refer to it often. It is my hope this information will help you produce significant income from your blog. I’ve had one for some time but used it only for my articles promoting a positive attitude. I’ve started to get some comments and inquiries from all around the world and it just seems a waste that all my effort brings in almost no income. I intend to try all the ideas expressed above; if these other people are doing so well, I’m sure I can do something. So can you! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
