As a manager, one of your myriad duties is the professional development of your employees. Mentoring your employees helps them perform better, improves morale, and can help your business succeed.

Most employees yearn to grow their skills with the aid of a knowledgeable, more senior member of their team. Want to take a more active role in mentoring your staff?

Try these tips:                                                      http://www.ideasandtraining.com/images/Coaching.gif

* Set the stage for a dialogue

Call a meeting or send an e-mail informing your staff that mentoring is available. Let them know you will match them with an in-house mentor who will help them plan how to reach their career goals. Encourage your employees to think about what they’d most like to develop with the input of a more senior staff member. Remind your senior staffers that they, too, can benefit from the mentoring relationship from the influx of new ideas that can be stimulated by a junior colleague’s fresh approach to projects.

* Buddy up.

Consider it a kind of matchmaking —

Send your staffers and more senior members, or mentors, off to discuss past experiences and future goals over lunch or coffee. Pairing those who have fewer years in the business with those who’ve got a wealth of proven experience is a great way to get a fresh exchange of ideas flowing. These pairings needn’t be exactly in line along the hierarchy; all that’s important is that the two parties can learn something from one another. It's also a good idea to take personalities into account, if possible, in matching employees with mentors.

* Listen Openly.

For one-on-one conversations between junior and senior staffers, encourage both parties to abandon their preconceptions. Instead of “right” or “wrong” ways of meeting challenges, encourage them to approach problems or projects by finding ways that work to replace ways that don’t. Neutralizing this language promotes an open dialogue in which both parties' ideas are equally valid. This parity will encourage the conversation to move freely and ensure that both the senior and junior staffer emerge with new ideas.

* Think Strategically.

One of the best by-products of mentoring is the slew of novel approaches it can engender. Once your staffers have met to discuss their professional goals and new methods of achieving them, be open to applying these ideas. They may not always work, but with patience and perseverance on all sides, successes will be achieved and staffers will see that their mentoring conversations produce tangible, actionable results that enhance their performance.

While mentoring may seem at first to be a one-way street, benefiting the recipient of the mentoring, it invigorates everyone involved. Mentors are stimulated by the active need for their skills, while they can learn from the junior employee, who brings a fresh outlook and new ideas to what might feel like old hat for the senior staffer.

Mentoring can boost communication, inject new ideas into old formulas, and promote a satisfying, more open work environment — all of which benefits your bottom line.

I speak of mentoring employees for their self-fulfillment and not for business improvement. This is because, when a person learns how to fulfill himself with the job he is in, will obviously lead to the organisations growth.. what ever may be the organisation and hence Organisation's growth.

Mentoring the employee is one important part to get required results. A manager has to understand the employee well first, then the manager can find ways and means to encourage them to achieve more. Work force come from different back grounds and situations. In today's fast growing economy there is large movement of work force under this situation communicating with the work force itself is a major task. A complete study of the situation in which the manager is in is vital. After such study and understanding the work force the manager has to adopt measures that suit the working conditions.

THis functional process indeed develops a postive envoirnment in Corporte company...But this process should be adhered strictly by mentee and mentor both.
The mentor should behave like Boss or even feel that way....it will stop the communication flow.
The mentee should be willing to learn and perform with in the spam of time or else shall be always over shadowed by his mentor.
I have seen instances where the mentor on terms of educating the new comer ,never let him coordinate with superiors and kept on doing back biting for him with his Seniors...
That poor guy had to quit....

Mentoring may help where you are favourite to someone in an organisation. Still the doubt arise who should be more transparent, most of the time ego plays more imporatant role in a mentor because he knows more than what others even can think off!?! and approach him for solace. In this present day, humans are self-centered, think of themselves, may not heed to good suggestions leave along advice. Good article, turning once for the management to listen to the murmers of the shop-floor!

At schooling special tutoring was organized & at higher education when submitting thesis, mentoring was provided but, the same concept is not extended to Industry. May be a fear that sharing technical skill will obliterate. This kind of misconception, need to vanish if a true mentoring is to be cherished among employees.

I agree fully , but the success of this "policy" will depend on two imp: facotrs in an organisation...[a] whether a 'climate' of trust and 'transparent knowledge-sharing'exists in the set-up , top-down & [b]The respect should be 'earned' by any Mentor , for it to succeed... SK.

The only problem is in finding mentors ! Mentors need to have a committment to the organization , and should have put in enough years of service within the organization.

Be a guide and teacher. Dont be a solution provider. As a mentor remember the Chinese proverb that says - "give a man a fish, you feed him for a day. Teach him how to fish, he will feed himself for a life time."
Mentoring is for the betterment of the mentored. Not for the ego satisfaction of the mentor!!
