Need to improve education system to compete with India, China: Obama

RDecrying the Republican plan to cut education funding by 20 per cent, President Barack Obama on Saturday highlighted the need for quality education in the U.S. in order to compete with countries like India and China.
Acknowledging that the country is facing tough budgetary challenges, Mr. Obama, nevertheless, said he is not willing to compromise with the children’s education as America has to be number one and not any other country.
“Nothing would be more detrimental to our prospects for success than cutting back on education. It would consign America to second place in our fiercely competitive global economy. But China and India aren’t playing for second. South Korea and Germany aren’t playing for second. They’re playing for first -- and so should America,” Mr. Obama said in his weekly radio address to the nation.
“Instead of being short-sighted and short-changing our kids, we should be doubling down on them. We should be giving every child in America a chance to make the most of their lives; to fulfil their God-given potential. We should be fighting to lead the global economy in this century, just like we did in the last. And that’s what I’ll continue fighting to do in the months and years ahead,” Mr. Obama said.
From the start of the administration in January 2009, it has been fighting to offer every child in this country world-class education -- from the cradle to the classroom, from college through a career, he said.
“Earlier this week, I announced new Skills for America’s Future initiative that will help community colleges and employers match what’s taught in the classroom with what’s needed in the private sector, so we can connect students looking for jobs with businesses looking to hire,” he said.
“We’re eliminating tens of billions of dollars in wasteful subsidies for banks to administer student loans, and using that money to make college more affordable for millions of students,” Mr. Obama said.
Authorities have launched ‘a Race to the Top’ scheme in the states to make sure that all students are graduating from high school are ready for college to meet the goal of graduating a higher proportion of students from college than any other country in the world by 2020, he said.
“And yet, if Republicans in Congress had their way, we’d have a harder time meeting that goal. We’d have a harder time offering our kids the best education possible.
“Because they’d have us cut education by 20 per cent -- cuts that would reduce financial aid for eight million students; cuts that would leave our great and undervalued community colleges without the resources they need to prepare our graduates for the jobs of the future,” he said.
He also admitted that there are “real challenges” to meet on the budget front.
“And if we’re serious about getting our fiscal house in order, we’ll need to make some tough choices. I’m prepared to make those choices.
“But what I’m not prepared to do is shortchange our children’s education. What I’m not prepared to do is undercut their economic future, your economic future, or the economic future of the United States of America,” Mr. Obama said.
So, now so called developed country is afraid of India and China.

It is a positive sign that U.S. President is afraid of our development pace.
Proud to be an Indian.

Education is a level playing field for any citizen in the Globe to earn his economic freedom depending on the genesis of developmental level in each country which is now becoming Global level opportunity for any one.

Skill sets that one has to acquire at one time depended on opportunities available within that country but now one has to look at Global picture. This trend in Business started long ago and now corporates look at Global perspectives.

The developments in technologies over the last few decades has opened up opportunities for computing and Engineering skills. In mid seventies of last century, there was lot of apprehension in India about brain drain and a little later unemployment of many engineers coming out of it's colleges.

Now with opportunities they had in countries like USA, they filled the need for such skills not only in USA it self but also jobs at home through off-shoring and evolving Indian industry. Self belief in one self in Indian youth to day is slowly turning towards enterprise of one's own to create wealth and in the process providing jobs to others.

Education in USA is much better as it concentrates more on personality development but what it missed is skill sets for the kind of jobs that were emerging after IT revolution.

This is what President Obama must be referring to when he talked about education needing course correction at Graduate and post graduate levels. At under graduate level, educational system is so good and I am talking about this with my own experience of my grand children studying there.

Even to day 60% of Nobel laureates come from USA. It is true that the budgets for research in basic sciences have been drastically cut in the later part of 20th century. The best brains are still very much there in USA as they come from multi- cultural back ground and from different countries.

USA has to maintain it's lead in supremacy of science and Technology and evaluate skill sets required for the jobs that emerge from there and make it's citizens aware of such opportunities so that they can aspire to gain such skills.

Some where USA has got obsessed in fighting wars for others and it has got it's priorities wrong. Present recession is like a disconnect in it's history and USA has to jump start into paradigm shifts in it's thinking and action.

A couple of years ago, my son, a ph.d in computer science and has been in USA, since 1995, was praising Dr. Kissinger so much for his Global perspectives but now we know that has lead USA to it's worst economic crisis. Thinking globally and acting locally has become a byword now for the individual, society and for the Nations.

The present crisis should pave the way for USA to gain it's supremacy and lead other Nations on the path of peace and progress for every one on the globe. The mind set of political leaders all over the globe has to undergo a sea change in order to create better conditions for Human living in each Nation.

He is sensible in this statement. He has realised the fact. It is the cold war going on between brain power and physicla / Money power. We have to wait and witness the winner. Mostly the money will look like ruling the brain power, but in actuls if one look it right, it is the brain pwer always ruling. For hypothetical case, if China, Japan, India withdraw their deposit, imagine the super power who will be?
