By Mike Stones,

New food packaging can double or, in some cases, even triple the shelf life of certain foods for up to 24 months compared with conventional packaging, claims its manufacturer Superfos.

SuperLock packaging is said to achieve the longer shelf-life thanks to very low oxygen transmission rates obtained through a new oxygen barrier. And barrier protection is claimed on all packaging surfaces.

Oxygen transmission

The combination of oxygen barrier on all surfaces and a membrane seal ensures an almost non-existent oxygen transmission,” said a company statement. “SuperLock is membrane sealed and has a twist-off screw cap which offers a perfect re-closure and re-use,” it added.

“The lid is easily clicked on at the filling line. Add to this an acoustic indication when the lid is closed correctly and you know that the user friendliness and product safety is exceptionally good.”

Compared with conventional packaging, the new design from Superfos is claimed to triple the shelf-life of products such as cucumber, beet root and red cabbage.

The new food packaging has all the advantages of plastic while giving the end-user the visual impression and feel of glass, often used for food packaging,” said the company.

When full SuperLock packaging holds 400 ml.

The new packaging is also said to allow high-profile branding thanks to in-mould labeling delivering sharp print. The packaging can be supplied with decorations anywhere on its surfaces or left blank to reveal the contents of the package.

Plastic packaging

Arguing the advantages of plastic packaging, Superfos said: “Plastic radically diminishes noise on the filling line and is even convenient for hot filling. Further, it is unbreakable; it stacks perfectly and results in reduced warehouse and transportation costs.”

Meanwhile, last month the company announced that another new packaging design had been chosen to deliver a new range of organic spices under the Naturalia brand.

The packaging’s functional lid and square-shape design are said to increase shelf life while preserving the quality of the contents.
