Microsoft Corp is revamping its search engine to counter the dominance of Google Inc in the Web search and related advertising business.

The world's largest software company, which is still in talks with Yahoo Inc over a potential partnership, has long been determined to play a major role in the lucrative Web search market after watching upstart Google take a stranglehold.

Microsoft, which has been testing the search engine internally under the name Kumo for several months, plans to introduce the new service, re-christened "Bing," over the next few days, with a full launch next Wednesday. The service will be available at www.bing.com.

Both Google and Yahoo have recently introduced new features in their search engines to attract users, making Microsoft's task even harder.

Microsoft is calling its new product a "decision engine," promising to make things like buying a digital camera, booking a flight or searching for a restaurant easier by serving up results based on similar previous searches.

A search on a make of car, for example, will bring up clickable categories on the left-hand sidebar, such as 'problems,' 'reviews' and 'dealers,' which Microsoft has calculated are the most likely places a Web user will want to go from the initial search.

Bing also incorporates the increasingly popular Farecast service in its flight booking section -- making use of the company it bought last year -- which predicts whether fares will rise or fall.

Other new features include getting directions to locations with only one mouse click, and the ability to hover over a search result to see more information, without having to open a new link.

Do you think that this new search engine will be able to give competition to Google.......???

Bing is as good as Google...only thing MS needs to know is how to make people change from "google for it!" to "bing for it!"
Image, video searches of Bing is far superior than google..and web search is good with even a preview on hover feature!

Mr.Anirban is right. For Microsoft to give competition to google in web search is a daunting task and as anirban said web searching and google has becone synonyms to each other.People without giving a second thought turn to google to find out answer to their queries and it will be very difficult for any search engine to give competition to google.

It is quite hard to destabilize google from the search engine market, unless google does something to destbilize themselves? Think of companies who will remain little reluctant to invest in a neophyte? Search engine and google almost became synonimous with terms like googling already in the market.

From what I've seen of this engine, I can say that it is fast. How accurate it's findings are have to be seen. However, according to the descriptions that are given of the features, it seems to me that this engine will be more product-based wheras Google is more knowledge-oriented. Since that would mean that they target different audiences, they will NOT be rivals.

This is good as there will be more competition and this will do more good for users as they have many options to get quality content on the net....

I agree with Aditya. In anycase, Google is addressing a service and Microsoft originally a product based company. It is difficult for MS to focus as much as Google can. No matter whatever MS does, its hard at this stage to destabilise Google.

Instead of killing each other's market like this, it would be good to cooperate with each other and come up with much more useful services or products.

This looks interesting ... what google has done to break the dominance of microsoft(MS) is, it changed the game rules of technology platform. To start with google search and then slowly getting in to mail , messanger and related technologies where microsift had dominance. Google kept its dominance at search where its the best and MS just kept with its own ways of doing things. This helped them expanding user base.
MS thought of breaking in to hand held music players (mp3 players) with Zune, but there it got to fight with Apple, the name which is the best at what it produces ( e.g. iPod, iPhone). Even today there is no thing best than iPhone UI and seems MS has kept the idea of getting in to mobile devices.
What Ms really lacked in both the cases above is superior technology backbone. Guess this is what MS is understanding now a days.
