The DLF Indian Premier League (IPL), a revolutionary concept in India's sporting arena which gripped the entire nation last year converting even the most cynical sceptics. Now the second season of the DLF Indian Premier League has started. The interest in the IPL has also brought up the country’s overall television ratings across all channels. It is eating up the share of other channels also...
But another news has formed a headline today..
It is regarding the prisoners in Kolkata...
Hundreds of inmates at a prison in Kolkata have gone on hunger strike after they were not allowed to watch Indian Premier League cricket matches. BD Sharma, the inspector general of West Bengal prisons, said the protest began after guards rejected prisoners' demands to be able to watch the matches taking place in South Africa that are being broadcast on a private channel.
"They are free to watch the national channels aired by the state-run network, but we can't allow inmates to watch private channels for security reasons. We have to go by the rules," was the statement by the officers incharge. The central jail has about 70 television sets, but only screens the government-owned Doordarshan’s news and entertainment channels.
As IPL matches are being screened only by a privately-owned channel the prisoners cannot enjoy the Heat of IPL 2009.
What are your takes on this issue..??
