OK, lets say that a crore pages are printed (physical & digital) all over the world everyday. (don't ask me how i got that figure - i had no start point; it has no rationale - it is just an imagined figure (and serves my present purpose). now lets say that only a percent in languages which i can read and understand . that makes 1,00,000 pages. (hope my maths is passable!!) right, of these if only one percent are of relevance / interest to me, i'm left with 1000 sheets of paper. only one percent, or 10, of these may be available to me within my resources. this means that if i read less than 10 pages on a given day (or 70 pages in a week), i'll be falling behind. every week i'll have missed reading 70 while the world is busy creating another 70 (progressively increasing) relevant pages in laguages i understand and within my resources to procure. that's more than 3.5k annually !! we all know the song !!!! without realizing it we may be falling behind by the hour !!!!!!!

the numbers may be absurd. all i'm trying to say to our younger friends here on TS - READ, READ AND READ - till it hurts. make it a habit please. resolve to read for at least 15 minutes or 5 to 10 pages before you close your eyes every night - it matters little what you read (at least initially).

i admit that the results will take a long time before they show (but unless you take the first step of depositing the advantages of cumulative interest don't begin to work for you) - trust me the results are well worth the efforts - as many of our learned superiors here on TS will vouch for. casn we also say some where during our postings as to what one is currently reading? (i'm reading Shrabani Basu's "Victoria and Abdul" these days (good historical stuff). i don't know how, but have a strong feeling that this can help. my regards to all.

An excellent advise to youngsters ! I love reading. Any book on any subject. I read four newspapers everyday, without fail (Indian Express, Times of India, Economic Times and Eenadu). One day I and my friend went to a road side eatery. After having some snacks, I started reading the paper in which it is packed. He started laughing because he is also habituated to read like me. He is now in the top management of a Nationalized Bank.

Thanks Mr.Chadha. I have been an avid reader; habitual at times too. You have rightly made a solid point. I am currently reading Step Across This Line by Sir Salman Rushdie and it is amazing!

dear vinoy, thx for commenting. the formula is no issue - i admit that it has no scientific basis at all. as far as quality of the reading material is concerned, how does one know of the quality unless one reads it ? let me say that to my mind 'every bit' is worth reading - if for no other reason, then to decide the worthlessness of it. there's a saying that you havn't learnt a language unless you have learnt to curse and abuse in that language. worthless stuff may have worth too. respect your views. regards

Brigadier sahab, I do not agree with your mathematical formula. For I believe it gives a distorted picture, as it does not take into accordance the quality of matter read. I am however totally in sync with fact that Reading is a powerful tool to empower oneself. No classes or lectures can replace that.

Brigadier saheb, you have made & proved extremely cogent and urgent points.

A good reading habit - like any other good habit - is best when it comes from practices in the family. Having such an atmosphere at home is priceless and extremely hard to duplicate outside of the home.

There are many advantages: Increase of information intake, analysis and discussion of various events and circumstances (which greatly improves verbal communication skills), debates and arguments are usually first learned at home anyway and if there is a good reading habit, the fighting and arguments usually tend to see good use of recently used words. :D :D

And all such things are good practice really - for the big bad world outside the family. There is equal responsibility to be shared by both parents and children when it comes to learning & training.

Dear Murthy sir, when I was a kid, shopkeepers packed provisions in packets made of newspaper. I used to read those too!

thx everyone for the encouraging remarks. hope this is taken seriously by those who can benefit from it. murthy sir, i must admit that i have also been reading the paperbags after eating - yet another reason for us to reject polythene bags !! but i have something else to share.
a few years ago i started what is known as 'pack ratting' in our house now. (i forget why the term, but it must have been from something one of us was reading). the concept is simple - due to the rush to keep commitments one fails to read all that one would like to in the daily newspaper. or maybe one feels another family member may be interested in some article. in our house we all just mark it. at the end of the day it is my duty to cut out the article. takes 10 mins. i put all the cuttings in a folder kept close to the dining table. everyone looks at it in their own time. when any of us travels we have ready reading material and lots of paper napkins - read and throw. trust me, our family found this to be extremely useful. my regards
