What is an Organization ?

The definition of an organization is; a group of people working together with specific responsibilities and roles to meet a specified objectives. This happens to be similar to the definition of a system.

It is decomposed as a group of people working in a hierarchy, without any personal prejudices, under a system of rules, to meet specified goals.

So an organization is defined as a system with a mission the responsibilities it endeavours to fulfil like manufacturing certain goods with certain standard quality of performance and marketing it to needy consumers with an role of satisfying the end user and to make him to come back for more purchases in future for the quality and satisfaction provided through the previous transaction process. This is also true for Services where no physical goods are bought or sold.

A manager is one in an organization who sets certain goals, specify the rules  and uses adequate controls thus to achieve the set goals specified by him. He has the mandate to use ‘carrots’ and ‘sticks’ to guide the employees under him to work to achieve the goals set forth by him.  Carrots and sticks, means, punishments and incentives.

A manager is a leader, who either 1) manages by setting examples or 2) leading by objectives or targets set or 3) through decentralisation or delegating authority.

An organization thus can be seen as a system working under command and control structure with specific directions set to those or selected for their willingness to obey orders, where the command flows from top to bottom of the hierarchy and obedience to work flows backward the hierarchy with set objectives as targets of performance.

So a mission(responsibility) and vision(target) statements are necessary criteria for any scientific organization, with specific work descriptions clearly designed to achieve missions of organizations

Going by the article sent across to me, It looks the same kind of focus that has been globally maintained, being a advertising professional, I would always consider an organization is a clear mindset with very specific activities to achieve the desired goals. How smartly you get it done. Above all it also goes with the culture, that definetly needs to be build in from the scratch, its a compact view of your own self with the system. How you manouver with the growing pressure of the hierarchy considering the set objectives as targets for performance. |It should clearly define the tenure it would take to make it. Having seen fly by night kind of operators, it is still the whole philosophy of the business culture that takes the stride forward considering the aspects of organisation. Over all a good defination for the whole idea of organization. good lesson to take home.

All of you sir as above mentioned , it is correct and this is really good article. However we all know about an organiztion, definition still we are getting more knowledge from us and update with concept. Because, today's concept is also changing as time is being change.

Hereby i would like to share only one sentance and conclusion that 

Team work (Family) + Coordination + Good communication (Internal-  External) = Organization.. Thanks Mr.Netteraja sir for referal..

Very well said all, one thing I failed to stress is there is a fourth dimensiion along with hierarchy, system of rules, impersonality(which I called personal prejudices) which is 'differentiation of labor or specialization'.
The countries academia should be designed to generate workforce that can handle specific work functions. Now it is all mixed up like non-specialists handling work from the experience they gain from work not from learning the philosophy and structure of ones specialization form the academia. This will also I think change in the long run when our country adds more wealth to its economy and is endowed enough to understand the need for specialists handling specific job functions.
Personal prejudiced too need be stressed since workers should not bring in their psychological problems into work places, either their ambivelence or dispositions, they should work as if there is no emotions regarding the outcomes of functions expected of them, which is what is impersonality is all about. Probably when the country get better endowed with better facilities the environment will converge to standard organizations with impersonality as a necessary dimension of orgnization by requirement rather as a hinderence. Organization is a process of dividing and combining activities and the total work is divided into units and subunits of correlated activities and the divided activities are then linked together as an integrated whole. The organization provides the framework within which managerial functions of planning, directing, and controlling take place for successful performance of operating work. Organization builds the foundation upon which the managerial edifice can be raised for the accomplishment of objectives. Planning, Direction, and Control can be of no avail without making the ground work through the organizing function of management. Organization is not only a mechanistic structure of duties, activities, and relationship but it is as well a human organization consisting of diverse social groups. Attitudes, aspirations, likes and dislikes of personnel play a vital role in transforming the organization as an organ of productivity and creativity.

Though we do have lot of organization and may be many of them theoreticaly build organization whether knowingly or unknowingly, I mean from commonsense or otherwise, we are still new to the game of organizationla theories being practiced to perfection here. 
Murlidharans comment about 'conflict resolution cell' may be a specific case for India, which makes one think whether we ever learn to exist in an organization effectively due to lot of external factors like over demand on citizen by the economy and under facilitation and endowment without much rational choices to make from infancy to death can create tension and conflicts in work places.
Proper endowment politics, with welfare science to create it and rational choices availalble with deterministic outcomes guranteed, will be the only solution open for employees to exist without conflict and tension in work places like developed nations and other well endowed countries, so that such unnecessary conflict resolution divisions in organizations can be avoided. Moreover and HR department too can handle this conflict resolution I think or OB practioners. Thanks.

Unambiguous policies, conformance to set international standards, very well defined roles and responsibilities, proper system of grievance redressal, and well monitored system and above all, a perfectly defined vision and mission statements synonymous to the corporate objectives would be sine qua non for any organisation to prosper!
