Osteoarthritis ( OA ) or degenerative joint disease is the most common form of arthritis. It is caused by the wear & tear of the knee joint. It involves the entire joint including the surrounding muscles, bones, the ligaments & the joint cover ( capsule ), it also involves the loss articular cartilage . The cartilage is a soft, firm, rubbery tissue that cushions our joint and allows the bones to glide over one another . With the damage to the articular tissue our bones rub over one another.

The common symptoms associated with osteoarthritis are pain, stiffness, difficulty in moving the joint. Usually morning stiffness is seen in patients when they get up in the morning but it gradually decreases as the joint becomes warm. Humid & cold weather conditions increases the pain & stiffness in sum patients. OA is the common cause of JOINT EFFUSION which is also known as the accumulation of water or fluids in & around the knee joint.

Often, the causes maybe be unknown. It is mainly related to age . Being overweight also leads to added burden on the joints & can lead to OA . Another cause can be long term overuse at work & sports can lead to OA developing at a latter on stage in life. Almost everyone has sum symptoms at the age of 70 , It is common in both males & females , after the age 55 it is more common in females.

No blood tests can detect OA , an X-ray may show loss of joint spaces on the affected joints. The symptoms of OA can be controlled with a mixture of medicines & PHYSIOTHERAPY treatment , & can often delay surgery.

PHYSIOTHERAPY treatment involves use of hot wax & heating modalities to reduce swelling along with ULTRASOUNIC massages & VIBRATION therapy ( IFT ) to reduce pain . Excercise modules help in regaining the muscular strength n help to make our daily work more comfortable.
