All the time, people say it’s great to think “outside the box.” Clearly, creative solutions are crucial for many problems. In your opinion, what business problems require the MOST creative thinking? What problems have you or your employees/coworkers recently solved creatively?

A good debate after a long time... The debate itself is 'out of the box' when postings on cricket and women rights are ruling the day. Let me quote a real life incident. We were waiting for auto and one appeared after an agonizing wait. The passenger inside refused to pay more than Rs.6/- (which was minimum those days) and the auto driver demanding Rs.10/- (since autos were not easily available) The fight went on for a good 15-20 minutes. My friend intervened and settled the matter for Rs.8/- which helped us to reach our place in time. A simple solution for a simple problem. We look at simple problems in a complicated way and handle complicated problems in a simple way. Best way is to look at the issue objectively and sort it out.

Thinking out of the Box

One ad I came across in this site at the bottom. Everybody takes advantage of the dabba to gain attention. Be it a dabba bus or a dabba itself with coins inside. Thinking out of the box means creating an aura of fantasies that seems real but unbelievable...in other words, innovation....Well, its better to have just the dabba for now because the real innovation starts from the dabba itself

India has huge potential to grow:
Every sphere in India is bursting to expand. See what has happened in Telecom & IT sector. From a waiting period of 3 to 5 years, telephone now has become available and affordable to general mass and many telecom service providers and vendors have made billions of it.
Every other field in the country is waiting to grow. There is huge growth potential in Power, Highways, Roads and Railways, Airports& manufacturing of Aero planes, Auto mobiles, Rural Telecom & IT services and Telecom manufacturing, Linkage of rivers to harness water resources, Fishing, Farming & Agriculture, Education, Health care, Pharmaceuticals, Textiles, Defense production, Internal defense and National Security, Shipping and Ship building, Oil & Gas and exploration and internal utilization and export of abundant natural resources etc. Major infrastructure projects like construction of Dikes across Gulf of Cambay and Gulf of Kutch and other such huge Gulfs into sweet water reservoirs. It is also possible to generate electricity using sea tides with turbines in the dike across gulf of Kutch. Roads and rail over the dikes across Gulf of Cambay and Kutch can reduce the distance between Mumbai/ Maharashtra/M.P regions to Jamnagar and Kandla areas. The growth in these areas can generate big job market out there which can absorb any number of unemployed persons.

The appropriate and perhaps the only way for India to get out of the financial crisis is to quickly launch the much needed infrastructure projects financed with infrastructure funds by way of bonds and other such instruments. Is it not surprising that the ‘ITI’s ‘HM’s etc., in the country are slogging with negative growth, while foreign Telecom and Auto manufacturers and others coming are prospering here. Priority action is needed to revitalize and reorganize the sleeping / dying PSU’s, enhance production to meet internal needs and then to export. With a strong political will, foundation for a major change can be paved within a year.

GPS / GSM Wireless Telecom Network for Crisis Control and Disaster Management.
Quick means of communication is one of the vital needs at the time of major crisis and disaster. The irony is that public telecom networks are of no help when it is most needed. The normal telecom networks are designed for optimum busy hour telephone use of a routine day. The systems get choked due to over usage. It is impossible to design a public telephone network that is capable of handling the sudden spurt of telephone traffic of sporadic nature that happen at the time of any major events, crisis and disaster. It was pitiful to see that while the 26/11 terrorists were able speak over to the perpetuators, there were no clear communication happened between the Police HQ and their various men in field. Even the police control rooms did not bother to get information from the large number of media persons present in the vicinity. This is very much evident from the fact that Mr. Karkare and others with him were not given any clear idea of the situation and as to the where about of the terrorists and the weapons they have with them. Death of those three policemen caused a terrible turn of the whole events. Had there been proper communication things would have ended in an entirely different way.
The way out is to have a private Wireless Telecom network exclusively for essential services such as security, army, police, ambulance, hospitals, road transport & traffic control, air traffic control, railways and important persons/ organizations and local administration, that are vital in the crisis control/disaster management system. By design, these shall be non-blocking, full availability systems for congestion free service at the switching centre level as well as at the access network levels.
Interconnects to Public networks could be available on normal situation, but it would be capable to filter or block these to avoid flooding of calls from other networks during emergency situations.
With these systems and network set up across the country in place, it would be possible to keep up fail proof communication between the vital points to receive information and pass on orders immediately from central control to various points to take appropriate action in case of cyclone, flood, fire, earthquake, terrorist activities, bomb scare, mob violence or major traffic hold up situations. It shall be possible to access the communications systems of Suburban railway and road transport from this network to contact and pass orders for immediate actions. Bomb scare alarms and announcement system shall be available in every railway compartment.
The network and systems in different cities shall be linked for integrated action of security needs and events and crisis of national importance. It is possible to have centralized database and control servers in one of the systems and shared by other networks.

In addition to such private GSM Network, other infrastructures for crisis management also shall be in place. Vital things are:
i) A centralized administrative body to take over and exercise over all control and coordination.
ii) A research and consultant group to constantly improvise the systems in every sphere, technology, strategy, administration etc., according to changing needs.
iii) A contingent of specially trained persons in every city.
iv) Necessary infrastructure such as modern weapons, armor and ammunitions.
v) Protected vehicles, helicopters, airplanes, fire tenders and etc pre-loaded and fully equipped in operational ready condition.

Special Economic Zones: SEZ by Public sector or Private sector or on combined ownership are much needed and so shall be welcomed it every State. However, the prime focus shall be the development of that area and the people therein which should be made visible beforehand to the people who originally own the land and live there. It should not be mere promises of the benefits they would get after 10 years. The rehabilitation of the entire displaced villagers giving them reasonable alternate accommodation and facilities and a means of lively hood shall be made available hand in hand as the first step of the project. To enable this it shall be made mandatory for the private participators in investing part of FDIs/FIIs into infrastructure development, agriculture, manufacturing centers and factories and Special Economic Zones in rural areas by various subsidies, reduced taxation and duties on the products coming out of the village units. This will avoid Nandigram like situation which are definitely going to repeat everywhere where mass scale human habitat evacuations are involved.

Exercise Control on Gold import. If necessary, ban further import of Gold above 18 carats and Platinum and prohibit its selling and buying. Bring in restrictions in owning of gold. Take over excess gold, print money of equivalent value and issue 10 year cash convertible bonds to the owners who voluntarily surrender gold, and currently use the money from gold on Infrastructure and social development programs.

Infrastructure development projects through Private- Public – Participation.
Private Public Partnership (PPP) is the way out being propagated by economists. However, parting with all profit making PSUs will only add the woes of the government.
In my view, the best way to realize effective PPP is by Government owning some amount of stake (say 10%), in all Private Companies (say above capital outlay of 1000 Cr.) in the country so that the profit earned could be diverted to development needs, keeping the budgetary deficit low without undue increase in Duties and Taxes. Government also should enter share market trading by setting up a financial company like IFCI, IDFC etc., so as to take advantage of market appreciation instead of allowing FIs to siphon out the investment of Indian share holders by unscrupulous maneuvering the money market.

Make the Army participate the rural mass in nation building process:
Without trifling the splendid service and the valuable efforts and sacrifices of the men safeguarding the nation in the boarders and elsewhere, we still need to ponder whether it is necessary for most of the defense infrastructure remain embedded in developed cities occupying prime lands. It is also worthwhile to examine, such exorbitant existence of the army establishments eating out of the central exchequer, have matching contribution during the days of peace for the over all growth of the nation. For the sake of nation building, it will be apt to move the army set up out from the cities and re-locate distributed in rural areas, strengthen them further and diversify their activities deploying them for national development, working hand in hand with the local administrative bodies and local population.
General development of the rural area and uplift of the people there by implementing centrally drawn out development programs making use of locally available and other manageable resources shall be the joint responsibility of the local administration and the army units with close co-ordination of Bureaucracy, Law enforcement supported by the Judiciary and NGOs.
All able bodied un-employed persons in the 21 to 45 years age group of the local population shall be compulsorily enrolled to form human resources units in every Village / Panchayat.
Enrollment and training shall be a continuous process. All persons in the units shall be given compulsory basic education, training in agriculture, trades and other vocational training. The eligible ones shall have opportunity for free higher education.
Paramilitary training shall be given for all those are physically fit. There shall be facility for giving short term para-military training for the youth from the urban areas and it shall made mandatory for all job seekers to have undergone at three months para-military training. All employed persons without exception, shall undergo at least a 45 days para-military training, once in two years. Everyone should be trained on anti terrorism awareness programs and prevention methods. Imagine the potential of a country with 250 to 350 million mentally and physically disciplined and well-organized persons available in the across the country that could be mobilized and used in case of any national emergency or external threats. The mobility achieved with more roads, highways, railways and infrastructure across the country will make the defense potential much stronger. Moreover, this will be best way, may be the only way to bring self discipline and prevent youngsters falling prey to extremists and the only way to fully eradicate terrorism.

To prove the point of Governments' apathy on "Out of the box thinking", I would like post few excerpts from my article "The Better pills for India in sequence here.

1. The banks, both nationalized and private are white elephants always with an eye on profit rather than service. Whatever said and done, banks will not be able to effectively serve people in the lower economic strata in urban as well as rural areas. Services of most of the Micro Finance Institutions are also unaffordable to people in the lower economic strata. A simple and already working technology solution of using Mobile phones to make micro money payments available, accessible and affordable to everyone including people in the lower economic strata in urban and rural areas can make a big change. I have send presentations and notes on this to, DOT, TRAI, RBI but no one seemed to care.

Most of the problems we have in India is because the Politicians, those in the Government, Bureaucrats, the Courts, the Educationalists, the Media and most of the Economists and Industrialists adhere to stereotypical ways, acting deaf, dumb and mute, immune to changes around them and seldom think "Out of the Box" or look for 'out of the box' solutions.
For years many of us have been meaningfully writing in many social media websites on many important aspects, even open letters to those concerned. Did any of you got any response. RTI act opened out a window but there being no mechanism in place to follow up the feed backs, opinions or grievances of the general public, it serves little.

Mr. Joydeep, in a way, you are right! We circumvent too much on one issue! The term "TIPS" (To insure priority service) followed by the Hospitality industry (acceptable) is percolated down to various levels and we coined this term, i.e. "corruption" to it! How is it? Is it not out of box thinking!

In my opinion,'out of the box thinking' suggests intervention or solicitation. The former by an on looker or 3rd party as in case of auto puzzle and the later in need of resolution. But it is always not necessary that resolution is around.

State of the art management is a concept that works well during only good times. This state of the art is worked out from creating thinking of people who made it in their lives, which were 'out of the box' when it was created and deployed which later on creaped into Academia to be used to train future generation to the state of the art.
Now during bad times things may be slightly differnt where the state of the art may have to be extended and enhanced for more creative output. This too require 'out of the box thinking', infact to think out of the box is the idea incorporated in a trainee in the Academia, good times or bad.
Google, hotmail etc; are example of out of the box thinkin while the infotech was being roled out to the environment, where a need for free internet and information search were thought out of the box by Subair Bhatia, Larry Page and Sergey Brinn and were very succesfull.
Present day the problem of enhancing market, maintaining growth when the market is becoming more global and production being outsourced to countries where the culture of business and commerce differ all need to be tackled through 'out of the box' thinking.
Thanks!

We all are inside the box however we think that we can be outside the box. If we are creative for a while we are so uncreative in other time. maintaining ourself inside the box. when you think there is a box your can never be out of box. however you just switched to one small box to other big box. and you are just in the middle of the box the boundries are far away. and you will know only when you will reach the side of the box. and when you will reach you will try to find out the way of outside that box to go in to the bigger box. if someone wants to creative just leave the concept of box. because universe is spread without boundry. so just leave the concept of box and be universal.

I am very much compelled to state, having read many of the comments , that most are based on a narrow view of the term "Out-of-the Box-Thinking"...It is 'NOT' out of the 'normal' thinking as someone commented...In short it is, "A totally Un-conventional, but logical thought process related to a particular 'Situation' or 'Problem', which brings in a totally different perspective, and 'Solution'"....Sushil Kumar[Mgmt: Consultant].

Inside The Box:
Thinking inside the box means accepting the status quo. For example, Charles H. Duell, Director of the US Patent Office, said, "Everything that can be invented has been invented." That was in 1899: clearly he was in the box!

In-the-box thinkers find it difficult to recognize the quality of an idea. An idea is an idea. A solution is a solution. In fact, they can be quite pigheaded when it comes to valuing an idea. They rarely invest time to turn a mediocre solution into a great solution.

More importantly, in-the-box thinkers are skillful at killing ideas. They are masters of the creativity killer attitude such as "that'll never work" or "it's too risky." The best in-the-box thinkers are unaware that they drain the enthusiasm and passion of innovative thinkers while they kill their innovative ideas.

They also believe that every problem needs only one solution; therefore, finding more than one possible solution is a waste of time. They often say, "There is no time for creative solutions. We just need THE solution."

Even great creative people can become in-the-box thinkers when they stop trying. Apathy and indifference can turn an innovator into an in-the-box thinker.

In only one case is in-the-box thinking necessary. This comes from a cartoon: a man talks to his cat and points to the kitty litter box. He says, "Never ever think outside the box!"

Outside the Box:
Thinking outside the box requires different attributes that include:

Willingness to take new perspectives to day-to-day work.
Openness to do different things and to do things differently.
Focusing on the value of finding new ideas and acting on them.
Striving to create value in new ways.
Listening to others.
Supporting and respecting others when they come up with new ideas.
Out-of-the box thinking requires an openness to new ways of seeing the world and a willingness to explore. Out-of-the box thinkers know that new ideas need nurturing and support. They also know that having an idea is good but acting on it is more important. Results are what count.

very interesting and most relevant in our professional life.I consider the product(the entire team involved in producing the product starting from the raw material to the finished product)and from the worker to the C.E.O of the company are accountable collectively and how it is placed with the competitors and scrupulously following the business ethics, each and everyone's action results in the acceptance level in the market.
So i consider the attitude collectively plays an important role keeping in mind the time zone ;place zone;and thing zone

Once I had faced this situation which goes like this... when I have met a project consultant for getting approval for my product, he has asked me in which way your brand is superior to that high end product. After a pause within 2/3 seconds I have replied that sir I do not want to claim the superiority of the brand you have mentioned, but definitely my brand is in no way inferior to it and both are used for the same applications and the difference between the two is only the manufacturing process which involves the micro processor[automation] and is imported. Ours is manufactured in India with semi-automated process. Then the consultant asked me to bring the sample of mine and having compared with the imported peace and finally he was happy and approved my Brand. Why I am sharing this because of several critical questions may be faced by our friends in sales. Thanks for the referral Ms.Shweta Nigam.
