Pakistan Plays China Card

The war of words between the United States and Pakistan has intensified – and India for one is watching closely as the spat is bound to be a harbinger of things to come in Indo-Pakistan relations.

Ties between the United States and Pakistan have been particularly strained since early May, when US Special Forceskilled Osama bin Laden in Abbottabad, deep within Pakistan. US-Pakistan sabre-rattling reached new levels on July 11, when Washington announced its decision to withhold $800 million in military aid to Pakistan, about a third of the planned total. The US move followed Pakistan’s removal of American military trainers and the curtailing of visas for US personnel.

Pentagon spokesman Col. David Lapan indicated that the suspended aid could be resumed if Pakistan removed these two irritants. But a day later, Pakistani Defence Minister Ahmed Mukhtar came up with Islamabad’s tough response, warning that the US move would force Pakistan to recall all of its troops from the Afghan border. The Pakistani military establishment exacerbated the situation further by playing the China card, saying that Pakistan could manage without US assistance, and could instead turn to China for help.

Of course the two sides are merely posturing – they need each other too much not to eventually make up. Still, the Indian diplomatic establishment is watching the US-Pakistan row closely because the Pakistan side’s behaviour in this episode may hold a lesson for India.

That Pakistan has issued such a hard-nosed response speaks volumes of Pakistan-China ties. The two sides have been flaunting their ‘all-weather’ friendship. The fact that Pakistan has now unabashedly waved the China card in front of the United States – perhaps the first time it has done so quite so blatantly – should send a chilling message to the Indian strategic establishment that India will have to also deal with China in any future conflict with Pakistan.

How Pakistan will exploit its relationship with China when dealing with India remains to be seen. Following Foreign Secretary Nirupama Rao’s visit to Islamabad on June 23 to 24 for comprehensive talks with Pakistani counterpart Salman Bashir, Pakistani State Minister for Foreign Affairs Hina Rabbani Khar is scheduled to visit India for official talks on July 26 to 27.

Given the experience at the defence secretaries’ talks, India will undoubtedly be keeping its ears open for any mention of the C word.

Pakistan-China relationship is as old as Pakistan as a nation. China was sympathetic for the creation of independent homeland for muslims during 1947. Describing their relationships, Hu Jintao once stated that "higher than the mountains and deeper than the oceans". Both these countries have mutual interest and identity of views. China believes that Pakistan played a significant role for China to break its isolation from western world particularly with USA. China also believes that Pakistan was instrumental in strengthening its relationships with Muslim World. China strongly supported Pakistan and extended military and financial aid during 2008 when Pakistan-India relations reached its lowest ever. China played a major role in the development of nuclear infrastructure in Pakistan. Pakistan is China's Israel. Fear of China, forced the USA to extend all possible aid to Pakistan till date. The relationship is now seems to be strained. How best we can utilise this situation in our favour is in the hands of our Indian Govt. One thing I can say here that this is not a new phenomenon. But, the backstage scenes are now popping on the front screen. It is good development as far as India is concerned in my perception.

India must have strengthened its ties with Russia instead of focusing on making adjustments with US. India seem to have lost the only friend it had in due course of time due to its proximity to a nation (US) which was always supporting the country known to be responsible for infiltration & terrorism i.e. Pakistan.

It is commendable that Pak has been able to find support in best & strongest of the nations earlier US & now China. We need to learn the foreign affair & policies for Pak. At least something can be learnt from our dear neighbor.

Thanks Mr. Rajeev for this eye-opener! India, at this point, will obviously has no other option, but to keep its eyes and ears open! We all know, for sure, Pakistan is closely engaged with China, allowing them to build barracks and bunkers along the Indo-Pak border! China's excesses in building dam to harness Brahmaputra in the North-east border is also well known. Pakistan should not forget that the US had bailed them out for harboring Osama Bin Laden in Abbotabad! UN Security Council should have declared them "Terror State"! De-stabilizing Afghan peace initiative at this point in time will send a positive signal to the terror groups, who have the potential to retaliate which will have a ripple effect in Pakistan and India! Playing China card looks to be so novel for Pakistan for the time being, tougher economic sanctions against Pakistan by the US will trigger internal war within the country! PEACE in this region is hard to achieve, I think!
We are already facing one problem here and now this news.. What is the future?? No one knows..
Thanks for sharing Sir..
