What could be Private Consumption and its consequences

When we consume anything beyond our endowment afforded by the Economy we are privately consuming. Indians en mass has to live beyond their means afforded by the economy to meet their needs. Some examples of our private consumptions are figured out.

1)When we need a generator for our Apartment complex instead of regular electricity supplied.

2)When we need a ups for our computer instead of uninterrupted supply from lines.

3)When we need singlephase generators or inverters for our homes

4)When we need to consume often from outside like hotels since energy levels are low for our work

5)When we need regular mentainance for our durable homes instead of maitainence free living

6)When we use cfl bulbs instead of regular bulbs for lighting homes

7)When we need to travel by First class instead of general compartment in Trains

8)When we need 1st gear transits on roads often instead of 4th gear in inner city transit

9)When we need maintainence and replacements often our kitchen and electronic gadgets

10)When we need to consume from grocery stores instead of ration shops

11)When we need private healthcare instead of general hospitals.

12)When we need to hit the Bar seen after a hard day without welfare

13)When we need two cell phones or more instead of one

These are few of the endless list of private consumptions an Indian need to resort to if he need to be generally  safe and healthy to live here. These require private funds outside ones regular income which is the root cause for corruption in our country. So when Anna Hazare and Baba are on fight to end corruption I think they are not solving the problem instead aggravating the problem.  When instead they can solve these problems corruption will fade away. Dowry and education of children are other major private consumptions one Indian need to take care off.  The government expects citizen to pay for the Lemon services they provide by way of taxing as if for providing ‘exemplary services’. It is for providing Public consumption which keeps citizen clean and healthy that usually countries tax their citizen contrary to our learned leaders who never seem to have heard of this dictum in Economics either in their academic life or lives experience. So we have to assume we are served Lemons if not rotten ones.  This is a problem and bad habits passed on for generations after independence and we cannot hope to end it in a few days time.

Thanks Mr. Cherian for this great inquisitive post. Decentralization of departments were originally meant to perform efficiently. Whereas, our present system took it as "blessing in disguise" and are performing as "disparate objects" - no inter-connectivity. No two departments would know who and what they are catering to, resulting in overlapping. Here, I will take only one example to amplify your point: Electric Broadband is an innovative technology to carry the Internet data over relatively medium/high frequency electric signals. Usually Broadband uses low‐ frequency electric signals to carry ordinary phone calls and higher‐frequency signals to carry Internet data as we see in the ADSL technology. Electronic filters separate the two kinds of signal, with the low frequencies going to your telephone and the higher frequencies to your Internet modem. The principle behind Electric Broadband technology is fairly simple ‐ because electricity routes over just the low‐frequency portions of power lines, data packets can be streamed over higher frequencies. TECHNOLOGY BENEFITS - ƒ Affordable; ƒ Uses existing electrical wiring and outlets to avoid expensive data cabling pulls—save up to 75%! ƒ Convenience for your customers or tenants. ƒ Every electric outlet in every room becomes Internet‐enabled. ƒ Easy to use. ƒ No software is necessary, simply “plug and play.” Reliable. ƒ Unlike wireless solutions that suffer from hit‐and‐miss service coverage, BPL‐based solutions provide universal coverage. ƒ Installation without disruption. ƒ Installations are completed in days, not weeks. ƒ Fast! ƒ Blazing fast speeds of up to 6 million bits per second connectivity. What we need, here, is convergence - convergence of Electricity Department and Telecommunication Department. Do we really have sense to collaborate? Only time will tell!

Thanks Mr. Muralidharan, I think sending information through electric lines was discovered from Bell laboratories a few decade before and I feel they tried it out in US and am not sure what the present status of it in US now. I feel there may be some interfaces required at the plug points which may not be expensive though it may be as cumbersome as the present modems and may be bulky when it comes to reversing the flow of sending information out.
It may be convenient for the user may be can reduce cost to the consumer, then this is something a developed nation like US can address, when we in India has not till now addressed our endowment problem for the citizen, I mean rational choices and public consumption. I feel when Nehru said 'industrialize or perish' we never made it a point to execute it scientifically and all are paying the price. Social costs to citizen even at this density of industrialization is prohibitive and we aren't even half way industrialized from where we should be considering the population density of India. US with 1/4th of our population has 100 times more corporations and smes, so for that matter any developed country with lower population levels. Thanks.
