Proposal to construct dike across Gulf of Kutch between Jamnagar and Mandvi to generate clean and cheap Electricity.

This plan is identical to my suggestion of dike across Gulf of Cambay, but for a different purpose. The idea is to use the sea tide for generating electricity. The dike shall be made constructed in such a way to provide water turbines in tunnels across the wall of the dike. The turbines shall be designed to rotate with water flowing in to the captive area during high tide and water flowing out to the sea during the low tide. Turbine wheels coupled to Generators can produce electricity. Anyway things are not that simple. The water head required  to generate enough thrust to run the turbine will depend on the water head at high and low tide levels. The over all productive water quantity depends on the capacity of the captive area and the difference in the highest and lowest sea level during the peak high tide and low tide. Planning and designing of tunnels and turbines required and its locations and functionalities so as to handle full water flow to generate maximum energy within the productive duration etc. are big technology challenges to be met. Controlling the opening and shutting of the tunnel gates to ensure reuired head for lengthy productive duration etc. are subjects to be studied in detail.

There shall be water gates that can enable fishing boats and other water transport vessels between captive area and sea.

The dikes can be used for Road and rail traffic between Jamnagar side and Kutch side drastically reducing the travel time. This dike across Gulf of Kutch and the one I proposed across Gulf of Cambay can totally change the topology and ecology of the region. The road toll and revenue from large area of land reclaimed on both sides, can generate enough fund to partly cover the project cost.   Moreover, the input energy is ciost free and the production method is fully pollution free green technology.

I request members who have more knowledge on the topology, the tidal behavior in the area etc., may please add their views and opinions to this posting. Even if the power genertion project is not viable due to any reason, the full captive area of reclaimed land and can be used for any number of SEZ instead of grabbing arable land from farmers.

I hope Gujarat and Central government would take notice of these and do some survey and research on it and other such projects possible else where in the country. Kolkatta cost is sure shot for both irrigational and electricity generation, if the idea workable. Those who have access to media and authorities may please foreard this to them. May be Reliance brothers can have a look, the elder one about setting up of SEZ in the reclaimed land and younger, about the feasilbility of Power generation. Members are  free to reproduce these in other networks.

Great idea...there they also can use that "Pawan chkki" model to generate electricity from water and wind pressure....

Great Idea Sirjee. I do agree with Tanmay, forward it to concern ministry.

Sir Paul, your idea is majestic. I wrote about the unstructured coast line developments based on an NDTV report, at toostep today. I hope you might have read it as well. We truly need people and authorities to get constructive. The idea like yours should be given to concerned ministry. Govt. officials should involve authorities and some education institute specializing in the field and create feasible reports. If the govt. starts considering these projects, unemployment, drinking water shortage, electricity shortage, economy all will get uplifted by themselves. I suggest you to write to "Ministry of new and renewable energy" i.e "http://mnes.nic.in/" under citizen point. I wish they consider it and you write more articles of the sort.

Source of energy from sea tides in Gulf of Kutch. With very modest Tide levels that can provide a usable water head of two meters, 1200 MW Electrical energy could be generated per day.

By constructing a dike across the the Gulf of Kutch between Jamnagar and Mandvi, it is possible to develop 1000 sq. kms (50Km x 20km)catchments area. With a very modest assumption of useable water head of 2 Meters during each up tide and down tide, it is possible to use a volume of approximately 2 billion cubic meters for driving large number of turbines in the tunnes in the dike wall.

Input mecanical energy required to run a 1 Mega watt Generator;

RPM needed for the Generators to generate 50 Hz power = 3000 RPM
Coupling ratio between Generator shaft and Water turbine shat = 10:1
Regulated RPM of Water turbine shat at 10:1 ratio = 300 RPM = 5 Revolution per second.(RPS)

Energy from Water flow required to run the turbine.

Diameter of the tunnel and turbine = 10 Mtrs.
Number of revolution of turbine shaft per second = 5 RPS
Speed of water flow required in the tunnel to rotate turbine fan at 5 rotations per second = 950 cubic meter/second.
Water flow required in the turbine for one hour operation = 3.42 Million Cubic Mtrs
Water storage required in the catchment area for 6 hours operation at every tide per turbine = 20.52 Million cubic meters

Number of turbines that can be operated with 2 billion Cubic Meter water flow = 100 turbines 6 hours

Energy Generation by 100 generators of 1 Mega watt capacity in 6 hours (during each tide) = 600 Mega watts

Energy that can be delivered in 12 hours with 100 generators in the dike = 1200 MW

Electrical power canalso be generated with Wind Power Machines installed on the dike: About 500 to 1000 wind machines can be installed on the dike that can generate huge amount of power and supplement the hydel system during the null period in between tides.

Thinking beyond. Mr. Paul. We have so many excellent ideas to share with the government but unfortunately the government culture is so closed to review anything new and proposed by the public, we in toostep should work hard to change this culture. Then sure we will be able realize our dreams.
