Recession continues in Satyam layoffs 7500-8000 non billing staffs by coming month

Bangalore: Satyam Computer Services, which is now backed by Tech Mahindra is all set to sack 7500 to 8000 'non-billing' staff from June. Tech Mahindra is opting for such a cost cutting measure to control the falling revenues in the company.

Vineet Nayyar, CEO of Tech Mahindra had said last week that Satyam has about 10,000 surplus staff and "we are looking at the least painful ways to tackle the problem." The 'least painful' ways of sacking is asking the bench, non-billable and support staff to go. Nayyar will come on the board of Satyam from June 1.

After the Tech Mahindra directors come on board, there would be a mass sacking of the support and the non-billable staffs undoubtedly, as informed by an official of Satyam. The non-billable staff includes the employees who work in marketing, HR and administration wings.

According to the sources, there are about 3,000 people on the bench and even, a surplus manpower in the R&D and engineering units.

Sources also said the outsourcer may opt for 'virtual-pool' sacking method. The company would ask some of the staff to take 75 percent of its salary and take one-year off and look for a job elsewhere with the fragile assurance that they would be recalled, if required.

An official from Satyam informs that the company has called back most of its onsite employees to shun more costs.

Kiran Karnik, Chairman of Government-appointed board of Satyam, said revenues are falling and cost-cutting measures have to be taken up.
