Recipe to Successful Product Development

Few lines explained complete process. Good to see post like this. I have some difference of openion. "Build owners and not executors" in place of this it should be "Build owners and executors". There must be time frame for everywork. Otherwise team may loose concentration. 

What you are suggesting is good but thats too much ideal statment. Finding such people is not easy it may take 10 to 15 years to find such people in a single team. 


Executors must be there in a team.

Any Product is to fulfill the needs of related prospective customer's requirement .The first & starting point is the survey for what is the requirement & who all will be the Prospective customers , this will give a fair idea of required Features , Functions , expected demand & class of customers . Now product is required  to be designed as per the survey inputs & may be chosen from exiting to modify or entirely a new Product .

Product Design is the process of bringing Concept  to Actual Product Design , where all associated members will prepare the Sketch , Preparation of Specifications , Drawings , BOM , 3D Models , Do the Simulation Analysis on S/W  & making final actual Prototype as how the product will likely to be .Now all validation process , proving the reliability & manufacturability is validated if every thing is as per targeted specifications / requirements the Product is offered to Development for Mass Production along with related drawing , BOM , Specifications , Assembly procedure etc. If any thing fails the entire design cycle starts  again .

Product Development is the process of bringing Design to Actual Product to be Manufacture , where all associated members will involve related Suppliers to Develop, prepare infrastructure / process & manufacture the Child Parts in case of Brought Out  & also Involve Manufacturing Engineering to Develop, prepare infrastructure / process & manufacture  in plant parts . Product development team will evaluate all Brought Out & In Plant  parts as per the Specifications / Drawings & verify assembly for final Product , if every thing is as per design , product is offered of manufacturing trials , to find out problems as well as any further correction on parts is required , if all the processes are set & validated as desired , mass production starts for final product for customers .

Nikhil!! Very good article!! Product development is very complex task and requires really good leadership and entrepreneurial skills. Equally difficult task is marketing and diffusing the product in market. There is no point in having excellent innovative product with you if you cant market it effectively. You have brilliantly articulated the people side of product development. Whats your thoughts on marketing the product?
