Job Description , Job Specification and Job Analysis - How are these terms related ? I used to wonder if Job Specification and Job Description are same or different from each other. I had this doubt for some until I stumbled upon a review in Harvard Business Review magazine. It is quite possible to get confused with these two things if you are some one like me. It all starts with something called as JOB ANALYSIS. For your information , Job Specification and Job Description are two by products of Job Analysis. Now you should know the meaning of all the 3 jargons.
Job Analysis : It is the procedure for determining the duties and skill requirements of a job and the kind of person who should be hired for it.
Job Description : A list of job's duties, responsibilities , reporting relationships, working conditions, supervisory responsibilities will constitute Job Specification . This is one of the products of Job Analysis.
Job Specification : In simple terms , A list of human requirements, " that is , the requisite education qualification , skills, personality , experience and so on . This is another by product of Job analysis.
Once we carry out the exercise to conduct Job Analysis , the result can be used in the following areas. 1. Recruitment and Selection 2. Compensation Management 3. Training Need analysis 4. Performance appraisal 5. Discovering unassigned duties 6. Legal compliance
