Reliance Industries Ltd (RIL) and Ericsson India conducted their first field trial of LTE-TDD mobile system technology. The results were encouraging, showcasing the performance of the LTE technology and the comprehensive ecosystem currently available to support it.

The trial, conducted at the Reliance Corporate Park in Navi Mumbai, used ST Ericsson dongles connected over the air to the base station to showcase the ecosystem capabilities. It achieved balanced peak rates of 80 mbps in downlink and 20 mbps in uplink. Applications such as high-definition multimedia streaming and LIVE TV, with on-the-move speeds of both 50 and 70 kmph, were flawlessly delivered.

This trial is a major turning point for the Indian telecom industry. It validates the likelihood of India getting the benefits of 4G technology very shortly. This technology would provide a comprehensive and secure all-IP based solution where facilities such as ultra-broadband Internet access, IP telephony, gaming services, and streamed multimedia may be provided to users at never-before speeds. Besides entertainment, this technology would also prove invaluable for mobile offices.

An RIL spokesperson said that the LTE trial demonstrated superiority of the technology and strengthened their confidence in timely availability of the LTE ecosystem in India with Ericsson's global deployment expertise. He continued, "This is an important milestone for Indian telecom industry in showcasing LTE performance on a live network. We look forward to leveraging on the pilot to set up a commercial network that will build on a globally standardized eco-system and technology that offers immense potential for a wide spectrum of end-user offerings".

Ericsson India's Head of Region commented, "(The) trial validates the future of ubiquitous high speed mobile broadband in India showcasing the availability of LTE-TDD. Consumers are now very close to realizing through high performance networks, the full promise of mobile-broadband, ultra-high data speeds for services such as internet TV, mobile video-blogging, online video games and the mobile office-environment. We are delighted to be an integral part of Reliance's LTE showcase as it underscores a firm commitment to standardized technologies that will benefit from economies of scale and global experiences".

The mutual admiration and cohesive working of the two companies looks promising. This trial has shown Indian consumers that the availability of 4G technology seems tangible in the near future. The test forms a base for setting up a commercial network in India that stands on par with global standards and technologies. Consumers would also benefit from a wide range of offerings at prices made affordable through economies of scale.
