Fun to see, but hardly new. When I studied at the university, we used email to start/stop all kinds of software on a remote server. We even used to sent in sources that would get compiled and the run so we could see the results in the morning.
A few years ago, we used a wireless modem to receive text-messages and use those messages to control the computer. Not just 'shutdown', but also to activate a camera-stream at a certain port. Once you get the knack of it, you can pretty much do anything you wish, just by sending an email or a text-message.

Make sure you also check for the sender-information. You would not want someone else to shutdown your computer, just as you are working on something important ;)
BTW, the command 'shutdown -s -f -t 0' can also be started directly from Outlook, without the aid of a batch-file. 
I would also advice to use to comment-option (-c 'comment') to make a note in your logfile that the computer has been turned off by this tool.

pretty kool. It uses kwiry - a tool that sends sms to a pop3 email account. when the email is received, outlook is configured to execute a batch file which shuts down the system.
