After ITeS, the retail sector

is touted to be the next biggest job spinner in the country. Till now, retail jobs in India have been looked at as low-paying and meant for plain graduates. But with organised retailing in the country poised to assume gigantic proportions, the sector will spawn a vast number of jobs across the spectrum, according to a recent study by Pricewaterhouse Coopers.

The study said retail sales accounted for 10% of the GDP in '04, with a market size of $207bn, and the sector is expected to grow at 15.6% with the potential of creating over 2m new (direct) jobs within the next five years. Currently, the share of the organised sector is $6bn, constituting 3% of the total market size.

"With the boom in the retailing sector, the HR scenario is also slowly evolving. There is now a desire in freshers as well as experienced professionals in affiliated industries (FMCG, hospitality and other service sectors) to look at retail industry with potential of offering sustained, long-term, career-oriented growth," says Muhammad Abdullah, managing director, Home Stores (India).

The biggest challenge facing the retail sector in India today is the lack of skilled trained manpower, particularly middle and senior levels . Munir Suri, associate director, head-South India operations for KSA Technopak, said, "Retail chains are realising the need to bridge the huge demand-supply gap for all levels of management - from front- end personnel to top corporate managers.

"This is particularly critical as certain functions such as sourcing, merchandising, store management and information management necessitate in-depth technical knowledge and expertise in relevant areas. Currently, most of the top management for big retail chains is being hired from overseas due to paucity of experienced people in the country."

Recognising this need, many corporate retail biggies such as Pantaloon Retail, Shoppers' Stop, RPG Enterprises and Lifestyle are either launching their own academies or partnering educational institutes to impart job-oriented training to increase the quality of manpower for the booming Indian retail industry.

Institutes like The Indian Retail School, RPG Institute of Retail Management, Reach Indian Retail Academy and KJ Somaiya Institute of Management and Research Studies (in partnership with Pantaloon Retail India) are now offering specialised courses in various aspects of retailing - customer relationship, store operations, retail marketing, merchandising including visual merchandising and SCM. Corporate trainers like NIS Sparta are also planning to join the bandwagon with both diploma and degree courses in retail management.

Some business schools are also slowly waking up to the need to offer specialised courses catering to this sunrise sector.

Amongst those who have taken an early initiative include some of the Indian Institute of Managements (IIMs) (Ahmedabad and Bangalore) and SP Jain Institute of Management and Research (at its Dubai and Singapore branches) with their special electives on retail management

as part of their general management programmes.

This statistcs proves that retail sector definitely has many opportunities and is the upcoming sector which is creating revolution..

What is your view on this..? Will the retail sector succeed...? Is it killing the small stores..?

With the projected GDP gropwth of around 8% in next fiscal, there is no doubt that all the sector are poised for major growth. Once there is growth in most of the sectors, there is bound to have more hiring of jobs in all sectors, thereby more disposable income to the people. This additional disposable income would be definitely result into more buying of consumable ans consumer goods. This phenomena is bound to impact the status of malls & stores, which will definitely fuel the retail sector. In other words the growth f retail segment is going to be in double digit and to manage that more number of people would be required, creating quite a big number of job opportunity. As a precursor to the growth, hiring of people in Banking sectors, IT, PSUs and even telecom has begun in big way. Nxt to follow is retail sector. Watch the move of big company's like Future, Reliance , Tata , they would be consolidating this opportunity in retail sector as well. The subsued activity on new`Malls was there till mid of 2009, but now, full fledge activities on construction of new malls or completing the construction has begun not only in metro cities but to most f he state capitals and tiier I & II cities. All indications are there for real growth in retail sector and job opportunity in all the fields of Retail sector is imminent.

But these jobs do not need as much entrepreneurial nature inside a human being. although risk taking ability is needed a lot there too.

Hi Shailena ji,
Retail Market has been always there. The consumer base is the same, and their demand levels are also the same. That means, the retail sector is not emerged or created from nowhere. Difference is that, it is switched from unorganized sector to unorganized sector. Operators have changed. From scattered grocers, cloth merchants to organized chain of stores.
The job market in retailed sector is also changed from grocer's illeterate helping hands to more educated workforce.
The coming up of training institutes to cater to the need of organized sector is a welcome thing. But efforts should be underway to rehabilitate the workmen from unorganized sector to the orgonized sector through proper training.
So that the transformation in this sector will be smooth and without any speed breakers.
