Due to changing business practices new and improved ways of managing it are coming into existence. The scientific studies are helping a lot for business development in terms of record management, retailing techniques, data mining, information gathering etc. I know that till now you might have understood that I am talking about the Radio Frequency Identification Process (RFID), which is definitely one of the hotter technologies and momentum continues to grow for its adoption by a number of companies in all sorts of applications.
FID technology captures data using tiny tracking chips that are affixed to products. RFID applications range from potential areas such as security, manufacturing, logistics, animal tagging, waste management, postal tracking to airline baggage and road toll management.
Besides having different applications for varied set of Industries, RFID holds its huge applicability in retail and logistics and it is for this reason that the retail giant WalMart is investing huge amounts in RFID technology and research to be greatly benefited gre from its security, access and control feature.
The typical RFID system consists of an antenna and transceiver and transponder (RF tag). The transceiver reads the radio frequency and transfers information to a processing device. There is an active involvement of RFID tag, which processes the information used for identification.
Earlier it was a debatable question whether all the organizations will be able to reap the benefits of RFID, but it now seems possible as we are witnessing the lowering in costs and their feasibility of applications. Before concluding, I will like to share with you the key applications of RFID for varied business processes:
- Controlled access to buildings and networks
- Scanning objects with high water content at close rang
- Tracking goods in the supply chain and during the manufacturing process.
- Element triggering during oil well boring
Although there are lingering concerns by privacy advocates over the use of RFID, there's no doubt that the use of RFID tags continues to increase. According to a new report from In-Stat, over 1 billion tags were produced last year, and by 2010, that total will rise to 33 billion.
That describes its future acceptance and wide adaptability.
