Sales Target is one of the major aspects of a sales person's life. You can say it is frustrating (many times) though enjoyable and undivided part of life.

With proper sales strategies, planning and forecasting for the year, quarter, month you can easily achieve it. To achieve the targets, you have to calculate the strength of your market segment in which you are specifically dealing with. There are lot of calculations people generally make, but I believe in micro level analysis of your strengths and your market's real time potential. You can also utilize your available resources to segregate the strengths and possible ways to divert and use them.

You should not see the Target as a major achievement. If it is an achievement then you are cheating yourself by restricting your  potential to explore it. You should always try to develop yourself.I personally strongly believe that if you are using your strengths properly, then there will be no any target for you as you will easily achieve it.

Some managers have a bad habit of reviewing balance targets on a daily basis. But it will end nowhere. You just run behind the excel sheet and nothing else. You by yourself demotivate you own strengths and instead of finding the creative ways for business generation, you just calculate the figures. I do understand the review of sales status, but it should be after a specific gap, not daily.

There is a line I use to tell to my subordinates, " If you look the small small hurdles in the way, you can not find your DESTINY. But if you look forward and set your path towards DESTINY, then the hurdles in your way will automatically get disappear".

So the one who enjoys sales targets can easily achieve them, and the one who make it like a grand Mountain can never achieve them.

Your comment found to be correct and most suitable for the marketing personnel. One Can Survive or develop only by accepting challenge and to achieve the things/goal which have  not think/plan in advance. 
Dear vikram,  sales Targets are Just a Yard stick which any senior having in accordence to market levels or understanding to best of Managment capacity.
Newer generations are over taking because their yard sticks are bigger & visions are bigger. Each Co fix their targets as per their visions , Indivisual has all the rights to over achive if their visions are bigger so they get better in proffesion.

I agree with you Mr. Agarwal, but as per my experience in cement marketing I personally feel that Sales targets are a baseline for continuous and regular monitoring of ones potential vs how much %age of that potential is utilized. And at the end of the day, even if the target is not achieved, the team leader should be lineal enough to encourage its team by measuring how much efforts they have put in and not how much results they have got. Because as far as I have experimented under my leadership I have seen my teammates evolve from "been ignored" to "being praised" and thanks all that to a simple encouraging praise, just for their hard work.

Sales Target is an important aspect of any business. After estimating a Sales Target carefully and realistically, a slightly higher Target should be set by the Team Leader. Close Monitoring of the Target v/s Achievement by the Team Leader is very important. During such a monitoring, The Team Leader should help his team in debottling the hurdles being faced towards achieving the Target. As the production year nears end, a regular - even daily monitoring becomes necessary to achieve the set Target. Thanks.
