Self -Realization

Desire is the root of all knowledge, action and thinking. It is the cause of our entire universe with all its grief, stress, and strain. Yet all of us seek only to fulfill our desires. We believe that freedom is to be able to be able to do what we want, i.e., fulfill all our desires. Success is to achieve all we desire and happiness is to enjoy all we desire. Rather than seeking a state of desirelessness, we wish to attain a state wherein we can fulfill all that we desire. And therefore, are we not envious of people who have everything they desire? Do we not feel attracted to and worship those who can produce and attain anything by mere will or wish? Do we not day dream of indulging and gorging on all we desire? Would it not be wonderful if all we wanted came to us with out us having to lift our little finger?

Such a state of fulfillment of desires is promised to us by scriptures and the wise through SELF- realization. The self is infinite and infinity alone is bliss. All objects and pleasures are included in infinite Self and therefore Self realization is a state of fulfillment of all desires.

Uncontrolled desire is the root cause of all the sufferings.Desire is like double sided weapon. It can be used to achieve productive as well as destructive use depending upon the individual.

Desire is good. Desire for better living and functioning in Day to day living to large extend good and healthy desire. Desire to know the real truth the almighty, knowing your inner self is again good desire. Desire to have desirelessness is again a desire. It act through MAYA/ the illusion

Due to our stress on desirelessness, we generally promote poverty and feel that those who are poor are spiritually superior. You can be materialistic and still be desireless. This can be achieved by controlling excesses and living in moderation.

This is a vast subject.

Self Realization in my understanding is quite not fulfilling ALL the Desires or needs or wants. It is to Know what One's self really is. When one knows what the Self is, One has to realize it. "Be one with the self". When one starts to identify One's self as the self but not by One's name, address or anything physical and desires identified not as one's but as of One's mind, that's when One starts to go in the path of Self Realization. But this state in the Maslow's Hierarchy of needs is on the top. One has to be vigilant enough with One's own self. And Freedom related to the Human Being is not physical, but emotional in nature. Besides the Physical freedom, One has to be Emotionally free i.e,. Let not the thoughts or the feelings cloud One's judgement of anything. That way, Self Realization can be quicker..
There can be lot more to discuss.

But for now,
Thank you.

Nice insight into the realm of SELF REALIZATION.
Thanx GARGI jee for the reference.
As mentioned by Gargi....."Would it not be wonderful if all we wanted came to us with out us having to lift our little finger?"....Yes this can happen but only in the state of "desirelessness"...which means have a strong and powerful intent and LET GO, the resul will come to you.....running after desires will might get u what you want but with a very short term happiness....Desirelessness does not mean having NO desire...it means not attching to what u desire.....

Thanks for referral of interesting subject.

There could be various definitions of "Self-Realization". In Jainology this is mentioned as the important objective of the soul. This further helps to liberalization of soul. Both things have utmost important. FYI: If one gets relieved from following 10 things, he is said to done "self-realiazation"
1. FORGIVENESS (KSHAMA) – Total lack of anger.
2. HUMILITY (MARDAVA) – Lack of pride.
3. STRAIGHT FORWARDNESS (ARJAVA) – Lack of cunning.
4. CONTENTMENT (SAUCH)- Lack of greed.
5. TRUTHFULNESS (SATYA) – Lack of falsehood.
6. SELF-CONTROL (SAYAMA) – Control over physical violence.
7. AUSTERITY (TAPPA)- Austerity is repentance of one’s sins.
8. RENUNCIATION (TYAGA)- Giving up possessions both internal and external.
9. DETACHMENT (APARIGRAHA)- Lack of attachment.
10. CELIBACY (BRAHMACHARYA).

These cardinal virtues are the inherent qualities of a human soul. Get rid of these and Self-Realization is not far.

simply will put it like this if you feel for some thing within and if the answers to the worldly questions are answered within its self realization..............
According to Vivekananda, "He who says he is the body is a born idolater. We are spirit, spirit that has no form or shape, spirit that is infinite, and not matter."

The moment we focus on body-consciousness, desires, greed, fame everything crops up. Most of the time, we play around with our Body and Mind, leaving aside the intellect part of it! As Mahatma Gandhi put it, "Our Nation is endowed to fulfill everyone's need but not Greed" Therefore, self-realization teaches us as to how can we build within our system to draw a demarcation line "lakshman Reka"!

"SELF REALIZATION" is base of self growth and progress. It gives direction to our ideas and
force for action.
Thanks Gargi for referring a beautiful subject. Needs have some limitations, but desires are unending. As long as the desire on positive terms, it leads to a successful attainment. Attaining a desirelessness state itself comes from a desire. Greediness is considered as negative desire. Self-realisation is the ultimate goal of a human being to attain, as Yogi Vemana, Kshetrayya, Annamayya did. In their earlier part of life, these three are womanizers, after realisation, they became yogies.

Self Actualization ( Farther reaches of Human nature) motivates one to strive towards giving a fillip to inner potential of one's personality disposition.Genetic inheritance and upbringing throws out signs of one's inclinations and broader hints of one's talent.

Self Realization has got more of Spiritual connotation like seeking to know " who am I". Hinduism is a way of life and we believe God is an unknown power and is within you and out side you.

It has to be experienced in one's self and that is what we call Reality.

Gargi,A beautiful insight."SELF REALIZATION" is motto of all human being, but few attains it.WHY?It is the struggle of "SPACE & TIME".When " SPACE" is available time alludes him and "TIME" is available space alludes.I therefore place Dhiru Bhai Ambani a most successful man in this category who used "ST" profitably.

Ms Gargi ..thanks for referring the interesting insight.

But this poses a challenge : "One should desirelessly desire Self Realization" or framed differently "If you desire to realize the Self, stop desiring"

Based on whatever little i know of scripture, the Real Self neither desires nor is in a state of desirelessness. The Real Self is just a WITNESS

Desires or needs or wants or necessities arise in the Ego ( the mirror image of the Real Self) within the Body-Mind-Intellect apparatus.

Self-Realization can never be a journey as all journeys ultimately end somewhere ..and whatever ends cannot be infinite

The Real Self - was,is and will always remain realized...It's the Ego that 'desires' to achieve Self Realization every now and then...in a perpetual quest to find a solution to a problem that never existed

Realization is in the here and now :)

There is something inside you, burning, and not ready to give up. Something that was in you since you were a small child. It can be a desire to change something, to do something, to have something, to be something. A desire to realise something using our efforts. That is the basic driving force behined passion towards work. It's not the work that motivates then, it the inner hunger being fed with satisfaction that drives you to push yourself a step beyond. This hunger can be called the hunger for self-realisation. Having the awareness of the inner desire is called the Self Actualization goal.

When one starts feeding his inner desire with the work that drives him towards higher inner motivation, he is getting closer to achieving what he somehow mired in his soul for long. That leads to Self-Realisation.

100% of all successful entrepreneurs are the people who have recognized their inner hunger, and worked towards feeding their conscience with the results of their worthy efforts, finally making them realise themselves. Finally making them fulfill their internally prescribed Destiny.

Desire, greed, peer pressure, need, desireless, realisation etc. there seems to be lots of confusion. We are often confused between need and desire. Desire to fulfil needs is okay. But the desire to fullfil the need for SHOWING OFF is what brings in the misery. Car is need. But desire to own BMW can put lot of us into trouble. Is it worth the toil? After much toil you get a BMW but then you will be back on the road if you cannot digest the Rolls Royce parked next to your BMW. Most people argue "Satisfaction" is end of progress. Progress need not get us into Rat Race. Balance of all desires / needs will keep us Happy. Desires matching the actual needs will help us progress smoothly.

self realization itself is a unrealized realization. The true realization is abstract truth
and both science and spirituality ultimately lead to the abstract truth. To fulfill the need
there ought to be a desire.

Thanks for the referral Ms. Gargi.

Like some Buddhist state, “Earthly desires lead to Enlightenment”.

Yes, go ahead and try to get what you desire. In the process if you feel happy, then go ahead, if you do not feel happy, then either drop “The Method” or “The Desire” itself.

That is, if that dream car is your desire, then do everything to attain it. Do things like Hard/Smart, Honest and dedicated work, in order to achieve that you desire. This by itself would give you lots of happiness and to cap it all you would have that dream car. If you put in dishonest work to attain the car, then in all probability (if you are the kind of person who listens to the inner voice) you MAY feel unhappy. In this case, drop “The Dishonest Method”. Even after putting all the Hard/Smart, dedicated and honest work, you don’t get enough to get that dream car, then be contended with the happiness you have attained through all the effort you put in and just “Let Go, Let God”. This is “one of the State” of an enlightened person. And then, in most cases where one follows “Let Go, Let God” truly, his/her desire fructifies at some point.

And then, please be aware that the “Enlightenment” and “Self-Realizations” are never ending life time “PROCESSES” and not a single time achievement.
