In many ways, a manager has to be a leader, so therefore a manager will have many of the traits that a leader does. However, I feel the term 'manager' applies primarily to business, it's in a manager's best interest to lead his co-workers effectively, encouraging them to achieve their goals and targets.

In my experience, a leader is more of a social thing; more associated with team work, too.

The most common difference which i find between leaders and managers is that a leader makes other people follow his way of doing things without puting pressure, where as managers forces things to be done in the way they want.A leader always leads by an example but in case of managers it is rare...

A good manager does things right. A leader does the right things.
In the words of both Peter Drucker and Warren Bennis, Management is doing things right; leadership is doing the right things" Management efficiency is in climbing the ladder of success; leadership determines whether the ladder is leaning against the right wall. ...Sourced from the book: Saibaba's mahavakya on Leadership written by L.Gen.(Retd.) a manager is concerned with what is happening. the leader is concerned with what is happening when "nothing" is happening.

Managers are there to manage a situation or issue while leaders motivate and show the path to achieve the goal. Managers can be termed as future leaders serving an internship period. Managers need not be leaders but the reverse has to happen as otherwise a leader is bound to fail in his tasks !

Leader is one, who take own decision and not depend on the others, Leader is having followers, he will not bound by any roles and regulations. he creates his own roles. Manager is one, who works in certain boundary, and he can't make influence of others, manager is having rules and regulations to follow.

Manager is one who manages or organizes within the frame work or his assigned duties and powers. Whereas a leader is one who will understand your plus and minus and lead you achieve. A leader has followers a manager has only servants.

there is tremendous amount of followership in leadership. managers have subordinates only - some of whom may be followers.

i'll possibly get back and write later but could not hold myself back after reading murthy sir's comments. nothing could be truer. i only want to further highlight murthy sir's point with my experience. here goes. had been preparing for a rather important high level meeting for a few weeks. on the meeting day i got delayed and arrived nearly half an hour late. peeping into the venue i saw meeting had started. my bosses boss noticed me. he abruptly stopped the meeting, opened the door, and loudly said, "hi sunil, nice to see you son. all well at home ? i was getting concerned because you have never been late before." that was in 1982 - i've never been late since then !!! was he managing an indisciplined subordinate ? make your own guesses.

Good one Murthy Sir. Really the ultimate has been forwarded by Biswajit Sharma. But there are rare exceptions when a good manager is a good leader.

A Manager asks you to come on time. A leader will be there before time.

Manager has to be a good leader but his designation doesn't allow to become 100% leader. Most of the time manager has to work to satisfy top management in course of which his leadership qualities get affected.

Leader's role should not be confined to shopfloor, but its beyond that for the success of the enterprise, whereas manager's role is well defined and he has the comfort of confining to his functional area.
