I was really shocked to see this article in the first place in Times of India recently.....and title just shook me off for a while, and inside the article were few hard facts which was unable to digest from me, where the rape victim is being again married to the same person who was involved in it. And that is something  which is normal........

When a rapist offers to marry the victim, one would think it's the perfect solution. But isn't this victimization of the victim all over again?

You normally don't expect a girl to marry her rapist but in a recent case in West Delhi, a woman wanted to marry the guy who allegedly raped her. This is obviously not a one off case and definitely brings to limelight the existence of an insensitive society that doesn't think twice before putting a girl up for trial, once again.

This March, K G Balakrishnan, the then Chief Justice of India had said, "A woman should be allowed to have a baby out of rape and/or marry the man and drop the rape charge if she so wishes." But most don't call the step justified. Kavita, an NGO worker stresses on the point. "The girl has already been wronged once. And to add to the misery, her predator neatly escapes the consequences of the crime by simply marrying the girl. You never know if this practice catches on, rapists might resort to such techniques on any girl he fancies. This is just not done."

The rapist also takes advantage of the social stigma that no man will accept a woman who has been raped. A source from National Commission of Women reveals, "We have bailed out some small town girls in the past. We make sure that mindless community panchayat decisions are challenged. But in some cases it gets very difficult when the girl's family and the girl herself agree to marry the rapist." But the girl should be given her due, and allowed to make a free decision without having to succumb to the social attitudes.

Psychologist Seema Hingoranny agrees, "A woman should never marry her rapist. Rape is a big trauma and the victim requires intensive therapy to get out of it. Some people get married because of their insecurity and the stigma that no one will marry them. But these girls barely forgive the rapist." She goes on to add, "Also, you cannot completely ignore the psychological status of the man. Someone who can commit such a heinous crime has something incorrect in his character and such marriages can never work. It could lead to more violence. I am totally against this idea. Instead of getting her married to the rapist, family and the government should think of ways to rehabilitate her."

Some have issues with its TV potrayal too. Says an activist, "Indian television has replicated these real life incidents into reel life. What they don't understand is that this could lead to serious repurcussions. TV channels should ensure that they are not propogating the act by showing victims marrying their rapists."

The aftermarks of the incident that are so deeply etched in the girl's mind never let her get over the trauma. And the dilution of punishment for the rapist should not be tolerated!

What are your views on this people.....this is a sad state.

not supported..
Now think of the victim whose no mistake (mistake by the rapist),make her to live under the sympathy of our society. The court had decided that A woman should be allowed to have a baby out of rape and/or marry the man and drop the rape charge if she so wishes but is this a pure/right justice for the victim?
If it is then it is sure that the no. of rapist are going to increase and basically students bcoz of the blind college love!!!

The rapist must be handed exemplary punishment. But in suggesting the punishment,no one suggested the best course for the victim. The victim has permanently been psychologically impaired. The society should care more for the victim rather than the accused. Will any body dare to rehabilitate by marrying her. There is no dearth of vultures in the society who takes undue advantage of woman who is in need of help.Even her near and dear ones will abandon her alone to fend herself.

Educated folks have lot of thinking, go to village, India still lives in village, raping is the way of life, as we in cities we have many way to use or destroy our energy where as in rural India it Sex, or forced sex RAPE is the one good entertainment and way of life its normal, (so girls are married young and we have such huge population) women have no choice they have to choose one of them as husband yet it the act may not seize if she has not married the thakur ka betta, (this is an example) this is no movie script it is happening. I can provide no statics as 98% is not recorded, well why don’t we do an exercise we are all equipped with internet and laptop. Let’s find out the penetration, usage distribution of Sanitary napkins and contraceptives among women in India between 16 to 45 years, rural and urban.

Ms Aarti as you have circulated the insight, Please take the next step by bringing people and resources to address this issue, I am sure pharma and FMCG giants will back your initiatives, be careful not to bang into political micro / macro interest as you will have to deal with all sorts of vicious activities I am confident you will make great going, you are a legal consultant.

Best regards,

Thank you for referring Ms Aarti.

No, never. Marrying such a criminal will become a medal for him. He must get very very severe punishment as it is prevalent in Arab countries.

Marrying a criminal is a crime in itself. Rapist must be castrated and hanged in public so that an example is set for rapists.

No. Not at all. Why any women marry with the person who destroy her life. ? I want to repeat the sentence of S Murlidharan.

Definitely not! For one, he escapes from the danger of confinement and the other he gets the license to fulfill his lust. This does not stop there! He would then become a devouring demon would like to stray all over!

Of course, he requires treatment to rehabilitate him thoroughly. Doctors and clinical psychiatrists should closely monitor his beastly behaviour for a length of time and once they certify that he is mentally stable to marry the person he had raped, then, if the other side decides to marry by exonerating his act of wilderness, marriage can be conducted.

I am neither supporting or opposing this issue, i have only few concerns in this issue. I have also gone through this news yesterday and there were more than 200 post stating that the rapist should be hanged till death... or should be given life term imprisonment, ------ is this the only solution?

I think that the solution should come from the root. Do you people think that by hanging or by giving life time imprisonment make others to stop committing these kind of things... Noooooo! It will never... eg. each and every cigarette pack is marketed with a caption "Cigarette smoking is injurious to health" so do you believe that people have stopped smoking? The same thing applies in this issue.

This kind of act is a mix of sociological, physiological, and biological imbalance. The news has only covered the physiological imbalance of that person leaving sociological and biological condition untouched.

Our surrounding does have strong impact on every individuals. Modernization has played a major role in these kind of issues. In this world every one is behind money and sex... which makes human being to commit such things.

We talk about sex education in schools, what about the education of poor child, where will he get that education. Its not only education, its child labor. Think of a small guy working as a servant in rich family, were he is always been beaten up or scolded for small things in front of a same aged fellow.

In India there is a huge difference between rich and a poor... There are many things which are untouched and will be untouched...

In our society we only talk and discuss on the issue and provide solution from our point of view... We need to think from the victims point of view in this case... will rehabilitation work for a longer time for her. Practically will any guy marry that girl... Is our society soft hearted towards them... There are many things which are practically impossible in India...

I dont say that rapist should not be punished, he should be punished as hard as possible, but we should think of change from the root level and provide a permanent solution for this.

We have to change the total system in India.... like: Education for all, Abolish Child labor, No caste system, Poverty and hunger should be removed, and and many more like this...

Ya, Nithin you are exactly correct,,,,,I am 100% agreeing with your point. i Can't even think "Girl to marry her rapist".Do women really "want" to marry their rapists or is it something they reluctantly do because they have so few other options left? I think the latter.Marrying a man who has raped you is a pretty clear indication that violent behavior is likely in the future. It's horrible that women in India are looked down on for something like that. It's not fair to the women, and to "allow" them to marry their rapist is disgusting!

No we do not need change first. We need the implementation of laws first. Once they are implemented properly then we can think of change. How will change be helpful if pre-existing laws are also not implemented?
It is not so simple to reduce inflation . It is in the hands of government and they should try to bring the inflation level down. Step one : say bye bye to black money.
