Shrinking brains are making humans dumber

Whether we admit it or not, the human race seems to be heading for a dumber version of itself -- thanks to the shrinking size of our brains.

The human brain has been gradually getting smaller in size over the last 20,000 years, says a new report. It includes both the genders worldwide.

This decrease follows two million years of growth of the human cranium.

"Over the past 20,000 years, the average volume of the human male brain has decreased from 1,500 cubic centimetres to 1,350 cubic centimetres, losing a chunk the size of a tennis ball," according to a Daily Mail report quoting Kathleen McAuliffe in Discover magazine.

"The female brain has shrunk by about the same proportion."

McAuliffe reported the comments made by John Hawks, anthropologist from the University of Wisconsin , who argues that the fact the size of the human brain is decreasing doesn't necessarily mean our intelligence is in decline as well.

Some paleontologists agree with this diagnosis that our brains may have become smaller in size, but increasingly efficient.

But others believe that man has indeed become steadily more stupid as he has evolved. Several theories have been advanced to explain the mystery of the shrinking brain.

According to a theory, the big heads were necessary to survive Upper Paleolithic life, which involved cold, outdoor activities. The second theory is that the skulls developed to cope with a chewy diet of rabbits, reindeer, foxes and horses.

As our food has become easier to eat, so our heads have stopped growing, according to the supporters of the theory.

A recent study conducted by David Geary and Drew Bailey, cognitive scientists at the University of Missouri explored how cranial size changed as humans adapted to an increasingly complex social environment between 1.9 million and 10,000 years ago.

They found that when the population density was low, such as during the majority of our evolution , the cranium increased in size. But when a certain area's population changed from sparse to dense, our cranium size decreased.

They concluded that as increasingly complex societies emerged, the brain grew smaller because people didn't have to be as smart to stay alive.

People may be becoming smarter but the looking at life in practical way...is vanishing. People both you n old are becoming sophisticated in every way while approaching a solution.

Thanks,Sharad,i do not agree with that humans are turning 'dumber'.In my opinion, human brain and technology are competing each other. The winner is human being with simple reasons that micro chips and nano technology are all due to innovative ideas emanating fro m brain. So size hardly matters as all living species are smart enough to conserve the energy to combat the future eventualities and that is the secrete of their survival till date particularly so of humans..

when we say smarter it indicates his or her intelligence in all level,we don't call any one smarter just because of his talent in particular filed, so definitely people are more intelligent and smarter in all aspects of life today, younger generation approach towards life is more practical then ever before, people are sharp.

ya but we can say the emotional thinking and approach is some where lacking, so i thinking that is the part of brain which might be shrinking because of less usage, so use it people and enjoy the life.

Thanks for referring this article Ruchi

I totally agree with Mr. Amit Mishra.

If brain size determines intelligence then the Blue Whale must be the most intelligent creature in the world. May be it is, but we would never know for we don't have the intelligence to find out ;-)

There is no way to quantify intelligence. It is also not possible to compare with the past and future generations simply because they don't exist NOW.

Firstly i will say, very interesting topic.I think capability of human mind has just increased decade to decade.I don't think that size really matters. If intelligence or capability of mind is decreasing then really it's a big problem.

Brain may be getting smaller due to the trade off going on between work and leassure. The zones, like amygdala, insula, nucleus acumben, prefrontal cortex, anterior cortex culsus etc; still perform their old functions, lke regulating pain, disgust, distress, reasoning etc;. May be hypocambus where the memory resides is getting smaller where we need not have to keep lots of things there stored now, sine computer memories do the trick for us.

First of all, Shrinking brain size is no proof of decreasing intelligence. Neither there is an prrof that Gen X is more smarter than our previous generations.

I dont believe that there is an scientific way of comparing intelligence of human beings who existed at two different points of time.

For some people it is an proffession and for rest it is a an sphosticated time pass discussion.

Believe me there is nothing you can do about your shrinking brain, not even wait and watch :-(

Dumber? I think the shrinking is goin with the gen-X trend I think! Smaller mobiles, smaller Pods, Nano Tech.... I think what is getting smaller everyday is the character, the personality, the humaneness, the social behavior. Families are getting smaller! Duration of stayin in a relationship is getting smaller! Husband's consideration and wife's patience is getting smaller! Lecturer's knowledge, student's enthusiasm; Boss's consideration, employee's passion is getting smaller! Place to live, good air to breathe, View of the morning Sun, twitterin of the Birds, belief in the power, natural resources.. these are the things that are getting lesser, rarer and smaller!
If we need to attribute all of these to shrinking brain sizes (??), I don't care- coz it's just one of the many things that is shrinking!

No, Younger generations are becoming smarter and more intelligent and in any way we are not using even 1 % of our brain cells.
